  1. 1. On aging and the role of Ubp3 in heterochromatic gene silencing and protein quality control

    Author : David Öling; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aging; Protein damage; Segregation; Transcriptional silencing; rDNA; UBP3; SIR2; Protein aggregates;

    Abstract : Aging is characterized by a build-up of damage in organisms ranging from protists to multi-cellular species. This damage adversely affects core components such as DNA and proteins which are necessary to sustain life. READ MORE

  2. 2. Chromatin remodelling of ribosomal genes - be bewitched by B-WICH

    Author : Anna Vintermist; Ann-Kristin Östlund Farrants; Ross D. Hannan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chromatin remodelling; ribosomal genes; rDNA; transcription; RNA polymerase I transcription; RNA polymerase III transcription; Cell Biology; cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Transcription of the ribosomal genes accounts for the majority of transcription in the cell due to the constant high demand for ribosomes. The number of proteins synthesized correlates with an effective ribosomal biogenesis, which is regulated by cell growth and proliferation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ectomycorrhizal community structure and function in relation to forest residue harvesting and wood ash applications

    Author : Shahid Mahmood; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 14C allocation; P uptake; Calcium oxalate; Solubilisation; Tricalcium phosphate; Wood ash; Forest residue; N deposition; rDNA; ITS region; PCR-RFLP; Spruce; Ectomycorrhiza; Community structure; Wood ash colonisation; Spruce colonisation; Competition; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Ectomycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with tree roots and assist in nutrient-uptake and -cycling in forest ecosystems, thereby constituting a most significant part of the microbial community. The aims of the studies described in this thesis were to evaluate the potential of DNA-based molecular methods in below-ground ectomycorrhizal community studies and to investigate changes in ectomycorrhizal communities on spruce roots in sites with different N deposition, and in sites subjected to harvesting of forest residues or application of wood ash. 5. 5. Quantitative detection of bacterial DNA in whole blood in bloodstream infection

    Author : Ingrid Ziegler; Kristoffer Strålin; Paula Mölling; Magnus Rasmussen; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bloodstream infection; bacteremia; sepsis; DNA load; quantitative PCR; droplet digital PCR; 16S rDNA;

    Abstract : This thesis aims to increase the knowledge on how quantitative PCR can be used in the diagnostics of bloodstream infections, with an emphasis on quantitative elements.In Papers I and II, we evaluated quantitative data from two commercial PCR tests for pathogen detection directly in blood, Magicplex Sepsis (I) and SeptiFast (II), from patients with suspected sepsis.
