  1. 1. Fault Injection for Studying Error Behavior and Validation of Error Detecting Mechanisms

    Author : Marcus Rimén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; concurrent error detection; functional error model; control flow error; error detection coverage; permanent faults; data error; error detection latency; simulation-based fault injection; transient faults; physical fault injection; dependability evaluation;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the design and validation of low-cost error detecting mechanisms that can be used to implement self-checking computers. The research objectives of the thesis are three-fold: (i) to investigate and develop a simulation-based fault injection technique that can be used on a wide range of VHDL simulation models, (ii) to investigate error propagation mechanisms in microprocessors in order to understand how to design low-cost error detecting mechanisms and (iii) to design and validate error detecting mechanisms. 2. 2. Robust optimization of radiation therapy accounting for geometric uncertainty

    Author : Albin Fredriksson; Anders Forsgren; Timothy C. Y. Chan; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Optimization; intensity-modulated proton therapy; uncertainty; robust planning; setup error; range error; intensity-modulated radiation therapy; multicriteria optimization;

    Abstract : Geometric errors may compromise the quality of radiation therapy treatments. Optimization methods that account for errors can reduce their effects.The first paper of this thesis introduces minimax optimization to account for systematic range and setup errors in intensity-modulated proton therapy. 3. 3. Gearbox noise : Correlation with transmission error and influence of bearing preload

    Author : Mats Åkerblom; Sören Andersson; D. Houser; KTH; []
    Keywords : gear; gearbox; noise; vibration; transmission error; bearing preload; Mechanical engineering; Maskinteknik;

    Abstract : The five appended papers all deal with gearbox noise and vibration. The first paper presents a review of previously published literature on gearbox noise and vibration. The second paper describes a test rig that was specially designed and built for noise testing of gears. READ MORE

  4. 4. On Robot Feedback from Range Sensors : Reliable Control by Active Reduction of Uncertainty and Ambiguities

    Author : Jonas Nygårds; John Hallam; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; robot gripping and docking; LQG-feedback; posture estimation; Gaussian sum; optronic sensing; sheet of light range camera; time-of-flight laser; specular reflection s; multiple scattering; range ghosts ; active reduction of ambiguities; reliability; uncertainty; tolerances;

    Abstract : This thesis is on modelling and experimental tests when non contact sensing isused for feedback control in robotics. The motion of the robot is to be controlled relative to objects in the surrounding workspace during operations like gripping/docking, surface following, shape measuring etc. READ MORE

  5. 5. Short-range Optical Communications using 4-PAM

    Author : Tamas Lengyel; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Data communication; vertical cavity surface emitting lasers; 4-PAM; IM DD; NRZ OOK; optical interconnects; short-range fiber optic links; multimode fiber; inter-symbol interference; intensity modulation;

    Abstract : As the demand for ever higher throughput short-range optical links is growing, research and industry has shown increased interest in multilevel modulation formats, such as the four leveled pulse amplitude modulation, referred to as 4-PAM. As on-off keying persists to be the choice for low latency applications, such as high performance computing, datacenter operators see 4-PAM as the next format to succeed current OOK-based optical interconnects.
