  1. 1. The role of reactive oxygen species in traumatic brain injury : Experimental studies in the rat

    Author : Niklas Marklund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Apoptosis; CBF; controlled cortical contusion injury; 3; 4-dihydroxybenzoate; fluid percussion injury; glucose; 4-hydroxybenzoate; microdialysis; Morris Water Maze; neuroprotection; nitrones; PBN; rat; reactive oxygen species ROS ; salicylate; S-PBN; TBI; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Neurosurgery; neurokirurgi;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of mortality and disability. As common sequelae in survivors of TBI are disabling functional, emotional and cognitive disturbances, improved treatment of TBI patients is urgently needed. At present, no neuroprotective pharmacological treatment exists. READ MORE

  2. 2. Models for the Transfer of Drugs from the Nasal Cavity to the Central Nervous System

    Author : Björn Jansson; Erik Björk; Sveinbjörn Gizurarson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biopharmacy; Administration; intranasal; Nasal mucosa; Central nervous system; Olfactory bulb; Rat; Mouse; Swine; Cattle; Diffusion chambers; culture; In vitro; Biological models; Biological transport; Dextrans; Dopamine; Gels; Polysaccharides; Autoradiography; Fluorescence microscopy; Biofarmaci; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci;

    Abstract : The blood-brain barrier restricts the access of many compounds, including therapeutic agents, to the brain. Several human studies indicate that nasal administration of hydrophilic compounds, such as peptides, can bypass the blood-brain barrier. The aims of this thesis were to develop and refine models for this direct nose-to-brain transfer. READ MORE

  3. 3. Microdosimetry of radiohalogens in thyroid models

    Author : Anders Josefsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microdosimetry; radiohalogens; radioiodine; astatine-211; thyroid gland; man; rat; mouse;

    Abstract : The radiohalogens 123I, 124I, 125I, 131I, and 211At are routinely used or proposed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The different characteristics and application areas of these radioiodine isotopes, together with the possibility to bind them to the same carrier molecule, give many advantages, for example, by enabling relevant biodistribution and dosimetric studies important for dose-planning before radionuclide therapy. 4. 4. Analyses of Rat Tumor Models for DMBA-induced Fibrosarcoma and Spontaneous Endometrial Carcinoma

    Author : Emma Samuelson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : cancer; rat models;

    Abstract : Cancer is a disease of genes. Uncontrolled cell growth is the outcome from genetic as well as epigenetic alterations, resulting in a tumor cell mass that harbors a cancer genome. During progression, the tumor acquires self-dependence and the ability to invade other tissues and metastasize. READ MORE

  5. 5. Development and Evaluation of Web Applications for Investigating Candidate Genes in Rat Models of Complex Diseases

    Author : Lars Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : rat; complex disease; rheumatoid arthritis; type 2 diabetes mellitus; QTL; candidate genes; web application; text mining;

    Abstract : Many human diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and type 2 diabetes mellitus, have a very complex development, depending on both environmental and multiple genetic factors. By crossing inbred rat strains susceptible to a genetic disorder with strains resistant to the same disorder, genomic regions associated with the disease can be identified, so called quantitative trait loci (QTLs).
