  1. 1. Retinal Transplants: Growth Differentiation Integration Organization and Survival

    Author : Rajesh Kumar Sharma; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; retinal degeneration; Retinal transplants; retinal development; treatment; connections; proliferation; survival; Ophtalmology; Oftalmologi;

    Abstract : The goal of the study was to get a better understanding of factors controlling the growth, differen-tia-tion, integration, organization and survival of retinal transplants, with the long-term view of eventually developing retinal transplantation into a clinically useful procedure for treating degenerative retinal disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa. Embryonic day 15 rabbit retinas were transplanted into adult rabbit eyes and were allowed to survive for various times. READ MORE

  2. 2. Models of Retinal Development and Disease

    Author : Minas Hellsand; Finn Hallböök; Emma Andersson; Department of Cell and Molecular Biology Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental neurobiology; retinal organoids; retinoblastoma; MYCN; Stargardt disease; Bardet-Biedl syndrome; model systems;

    Abstract : For a model of a human disease to be valid and useful, it is important that key genotypic and phenotypic traits are shared between model system and human. The work in this thesis has been focused on generating new and characterizing spontaneous models of three genetic disorders affecting the retina: retinoblastoma, a childhood cancer with its origin in the fetal retina, Stargardt disease, a juvenile form of macular degeneration, and Bardet-Biedl syndrome, a pleiotropic ciliopathy featuring retinal degeneration. 3. 3. Experimental porcine models of retinal ischemia

    Author : Håkan Morén; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; retinal ischemia; animal model; multifocal electroretinography; intraarterial coiling; retinal vasculature;

    Abstract : Retinal ischaemia resulting from e.g. diabetes, vein thrombosis or arterial occlusion, is one of the major causes of visual impairment and blindness. Although new methods of treatment are being developed, there is still a need for more effective pharmacological forms of treatment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Stem cell function and organ development : analysis of Lhx2 function in hematopoietic stem cells and eye development

    Author : Lina Dahl; Leif Carlsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lhx2; hematopoietic system; hematopoietic stem cell; progenitor; embryonic stem cell; embryoid body; eye development; forebrain; eye field transcription factor; Molecular medicine genetics and pathology ; Molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ; molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ; molecular medicine  genetics and pathology ;

    Abstract : When a multicellular organism suffers damages to tissues/organs it heals itself by either substituting the lost cellular matrix by scar formation or by regenerating the lost tissue. Regeneration likely occurs by a recapitulation of the developmental process that formed the organ. READ MORE

  5. 5. Development of photoreceptor organs in teleosts, Molecular and immunocytochemical studies

    Author : Johan Forsell; Tumörmikromiljö; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fish; opsin; extraretinal; retina; Development; pineal organ; Zoology; Zoologi;

    Abstract : Many vertebrate animals are known to have multiple sites for photoreception that are not involved in vision. Extraretinal photoreception is indicated to play a crucial role in early development, physiology and behavior, as well as in later biological processes. READ MORE
