  1. 1. Arsenic in tubewell water of Bangladesh and approaches for sustainable mitigation

    Author : Md. Jakariya; Prosun Bhattacharya; Jan Hoinkis; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tubewell; Arsenic; field test kit; groundwater; sediment colour; local drillers; safe aquifer; people’s initiatives; Participatory GIS PGIS ; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Abstract : There is an urgent need for Bangladesh to identify the arsenic (As) contaminated tubewells (TWs) in order to assess the health risks and initiate appropriate mitigation measures. This involves testing water in millions of TWs and raising community awareness about the health problems related to chronic As exposure from drinking water, and providing alternative safe water option for the exposed population of the country. 2. 2. Acidification trends in Swedish lakes : an assessment of past water chemistry conditions using lake sediments

    Author : Tom Korsman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Palaeolimnology; acidification history; alkalization; acid deposition; land-use; lake sediments; near infrared spectroscopy; diatoms; multivariate calibration; Sweden;

    Abstract : This thesis presents temporal perspectives of lake acidification in Sweden. Sediment records have been used to study timing, trends and causes of acidification, and two different techniques for assessing past lake-water acidity are presented. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hydrogeological and geochemical assessment of aquifer systems with geogenic arsenic in Southeastern Bangladesh : Targeting low arsenic aquifers for safe drinking water supplies in Matlab

    Author : Mattias von Brömssen; Prosun Bhattacharya; David Polya; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arsenic; Bangladesh; drinking water; groundwater; sustainability; geochemistry; hydrogeology; modelling;

    Abstract : Naturally occurring arsenic (As) in Holocene aquifers in Bangladesh have undermined a long success of supplying the population with safe drinking water. Arsenic is mobilised in reducing environments through reductive dissolution of Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides. READ MORE

  4. 4. A palaeolimnological study of the anthropogenic impact on dissolved organic carbon in South Swedish lakes

    Author : Petra Bragée; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DOC; Brownification; Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm; Land-use changes; Lake sediments; Anthropogenic impact;

    Abstract : During the past three decades, increases have been observed in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and colour in the surface waters of lakes and rivers in parts of Europe and North America, raising concern about the effects on the quality of aquatic environments with consequences for biodiversity, resource availability and recreational use. Various hypotheses have been put forward to explain the recent increases in DOC concentration and numerous studies have been published linking them to declining anthropogenic atmospherically deposited sulphur.
