  1. 1. Aspects on sepsis : treatment and markers

    Author : Anna Gustafsson; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : antimicrobial peptides; cytokines; lipoteichoic acid; lipopolysaccharide; soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor; sepsis;

    Abstract : Sepsis is one of the greatest challenges in critical care medicine today, while the treatment of sepsis and evaluation of its severity is complicated. The first part of this thesis presents two approaches on the use of antimicrobial peptides in sepsis treatment, relying on both soluble and immobilized peptides. READ MORE

  2. 2. C5a Receptor Expression in Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock

    Author : Mia Furebring; Jan Sjölin; Per Folllin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; C5a receptor; granulocyte; severe sepsis; septic shock; chemotaxis; anti-C5a treatment; ex vivo incubation; C5a; interleukin-8; LPS; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : In patients with sepsis, the activation of the cascade systems, for example the complement system with the generation of C5a, is followed by a state of immunosuppression with impaired bactericidal capacity caused by suppression of the neutrophil granulocytes. To inhibit the C5a-induced systemic inflammatory and the following anti-inflammatory responses, different anti-C5a strategies have been successful in experimental models of sepsis. READ MORE

  3. 3. Biomolecules at Interfaces -Studied by Surface and Solution Techniques

    Author : Anna Bergstrand; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LDL; sepsis; PEG; LPS; lipopolysaccharide; QCM-D; SPR;

    Abstract : The interfacial behaviour of biomolecules in general and proteins in particular is interesting from a biochemical point of view since proteins are involved in processes such as complement activation, blood coagulation and atherosclerotic plaque formation, but also in the context of biomedical applications such as solid-phase diagnostics, therapeutic aphaeresis and biosensors. The objective of this thesis is to study biomolecular interactions using surface sensitive biosensor techniques such as surface plasmon resonance, SPR, in combination with bulk techniques. READ MORE

  4. 4. Antibiotic-induced Bacterial Toxin Release – Inhibition by Protein Synthesis Inhibitors

    Author : Gunilla Hjerdt-Goscinski; Jan Sjölin; Monica Lundholm; Inga Odenholt; Ingrid Nilsson-Ehle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; Endotoxin; LPS; exotoxin; SpeA; penicillin-binding protein; aminoglycosides; clindamycin; β-lactam antibiotics; severe sepsis; septic shock; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Toxic products, such as endotoxin from the gram-negative and exotoxin from the gram-positive bacteria, are the most important initiators of the inflammatory host response in sepsis. In addition to antibacterial treatment, numerous attempts have been made to interfere with the exaggerated proinflammatory cascade initiated by the toxins. READ MORE

  5. 5. Innate immune cell response in sepsis

    Author : Yongzhi Wang; Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inflammation; abdominal sepsis; neutrophil; monocyte; platelet; coagulation; lung;

    Abstract : Leukocyte recruitment is known to be a key feature at sites of inflammation and important in the combat against infectious agents. However, the mechanisms of leukocyte recruitment in the pulmonary microvasculature in response to local and systemic inflammation remain elusive. READ MORE
