  1. 1. Crystal chemistry of Fe-Ti oxides in mafic rocks and metabasites: A study aimed at refinement of geological tools and interpretations

    Author : Benyam Estifanos; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fe-Ti oxide; hercynite; siderite; stilpnomelane; olivine corona; Swedish Caledonides; hysteresis; PIXE; synchrotron XRD; Rietveld; microprobe; red corundum; palaeomagnetism; eclogite; plagioclase clouding; dolerite; pyroxene gneiss; Geology; physical geography; Geologi; fysisk geografi;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of four subprojects: (A) ‘Clouding of plagioclase by Fe-Ti oxides’, (B) ‘Fe-Ti oxides during high-pressure metamorphism of mafic rocks’, (C) ‘Magnetic study of Fe-Ti oxides in mafic rocks and metabasites’, and (D) ‘Topotactic phase transitions in oxide minerals’. A) In southern Sweden dolerite dikes and gabbros with clouded plagioclase are common. READ MORE

  2. 2. Experimental, petrological and geochemical investigations of ikaite (CaCO3·6H2O) formation in marine environments

    Author : Elin Tollefsen; Alasdair Skelton; Carl-Magnus Mörth; Erik Sturkell; Andrew Putnis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ikaite; petrology; experiment; geochemistry; marine environments; pseudomorphs; calcium carbonate; Ikka Fjord; glendonite; nepheline; siderite; paleotemperature; carbonatite; Geology; geologi;

    Abstract : Carbonates are a group of minerals that play an essential role in several processes on planet Earth, for example in the global carbon cycle and as a product of biomineralisation. Calcite (CaCO3) is by far the most common mineral in the carbonate group, and the stable form of carbonate at Earth surface conditions. READ MORE

  3. 3. REACTIVE TRANSPORT MODELLING OF DISSOLVED CO2 IN POROUS MEDIA : Injection into and leakage from geological reservoirs

    Author : Nawaz Ahmad; Anders Wörman; Auli Niemi; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; CO2 geological storage and safety; leakage of brine saturated with dissolved CO2; reactive transport; fracture; advection; dispersion and diffusion; sorption; carbonate minerals kinetic reactions; calcite; dolomite; siderite; porosity; permeability; heat transport; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : The geological sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the options of controlling the greenhouse gas emissions. However, leakage of CO2 from the storage reservoir is a risk associated with geological sequestration. Over longer times, large-scale groundwater motion may cause leakage of dissolved CO2 (CO2aq). 4. 4. Diagenesis and Sequence Stratigraphy : an integrated approach to constrain evolution of reservoir quality in sandstones

    Author : João Marcelo Ketzer; Karl Ramseyer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : Diagenesis and sequence stratigraphy have been formally treated as two separate disciplines in sedimentary petrology. This thesis demonstrates that synergy between these two subjects can be used to constrain evolution of reservoir quality in sandstones. READ MORE

  5. 5. Late Cenozoic Geoarchives from Lake Baikal, Siberia

    Author : Tomasz Sapota; Ala Aldahan; Göran Possnert; Ihsan Al-Aasm; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quaternary geology; Lake Baikal; Be-10 isotope; chronology; paleoclimate; tectonics; geomagnetic field; cosmic rays; Kvartärgeologi; Quaternary geology; Kvartärgeologi;

    Abstract : Three long sediment cores (BDP-98 – 600 m, BDP-96 – 200 m and BDP-93 – 100 m) drilled in Lake Baikal (Siberia) have been studied with the aims of establishing an absolute chronology and reconstructing paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes in the region. The location of the lake at relatively high latitude and continental interior and a thick continuous sedimentary archive that developed in a rift system tectonic setting provide unique material for this investigation.
