  1. 1. Rarity in boreal stream: patterns, causes and consequences

    Author : Per-Ola Hoffsten; Bo W. Svensson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Central Sweden; site occupancy; dispersal limitation; natural disturbances; recolonization; flight-morphology; metapopulation; habitat stability; spring specialists; Crunoecia irrorata; niche limitation; Isogenus nubecula; nestedness; longitudinal distribution; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Patterns of site occupancy among boreal stream insects were studied in central Sweden with focus on sparsely distributed species and the role of dispersal and niche limitations.In the study of dispersal limitation, I found that effects of an extraordinarily harsh winter in small to medium-sized streams were strongest in sites located in small streams and far from lake outlets. 2. 2. Plant community assembly in grazed grasslands

    Author : Bryndís Marteinsdóttir; Eriksson Ove; Cousins Sara A. O.; Johan Ehrlén; Meelis Pärtel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Assembly rules; dispersal limitation; environmental filtering; establishment limitation; ex-arable fields; functional traits; landscape history; semi-natural grasslands; seed bank; seed augmentation; seed rain; trait based filtering; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Species assembly into local communities from the surrounding region can be caused either by species failure to reach the site (i.e. seed limitation) or to establish (i.e. READ MORE

  3. 3. Small Sanitation Systems – Treatment Efficiency, Sustainability and Implementation

    Abstract : Current socio-technical wastewater system paradigms are being challenged by emerging global issues such as climate change, environmental degradation and scarcity of resources. Thus, exploration of innovative new urban water management solutions is required that enable closure of resource loops. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nutrient imbalance in Norway spruce

    Author : Gunnar Thelin; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Silviculture; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; nitrogen saturation; base saturation; pH; multiple limitation; deficiency; copper; boron; potassium; pollution; sustainability; conifers; forestry; forestry technology; Skogsvetenskap; skogsbruk; skogsteknik; Soil Science; agricultural hydrology; Lantbrukshydrologi; marklära;

    Abstract : The studies presented in my thesis indicate that growing Norway spruce in monoculture does not constitute sustainable forest management in a high N and S deposition environment, such as in southern Sweden. The combination of N-induced high growth rates and leaching due to soil acidification causes soil reserves of nutrients to decrease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Plant responses after drainage and restoration in rich fens

    Author : Kalle Mälson; Håkan Rydin; Sebastian Sundberg; Harri Vasander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; brown mosses; bryophytes; colonization; competition; dispersal limitation; liming; mire; peatland; rewetting; wetland restoration; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Rich fens are an important, but threatened, habitat type in the boreal landscape. In this thesis I have examined responses of rich fen vascular plants and bryophytes after drainage and restoration.The effects of drainage on the rich fen flora were observed in a long time study and the responses were rapid and drastic.
