  1. 1. The influence of multiscale hyporheic flow on solute transport : Implications for stream restoration enhancing nitrogen removal

    Author : Ida Morén; Anders Wörman; Joakim Riml; Roy Haggerty; KTH; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hyporheic exchange flow; Hydrological modeling; Solute transport; Stream restoration; Nitrogen; Power spectral analysis; Hydraulic and Hydrologic Engineering; Hydraulik och teknisk hydrologi;

    Abstract : Stream water that flows into and out of streambeds is called hyporheic exchange flow (HEF).It continuously interacts with groundwater and thereby affect the water quality of local streamreaches as well as downstream recipients by providing an environment where solutes andenergy can be retained and degraded. 2. 2. Mechanisms of transendothelial and tissue transport in the peritoneum. Experimental studies on rat

    Author : Bert-Inge Rosengren; Njurmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nefrologi; Urologi; hyaluronan; interstitium; blood flow; rat; pore; inhibition; temperature; peritoneal dialysis; permeability; capillary; protein; passive; active; transport; transcytosis; vesicle; Urology; nephrology; small solute;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, the quantitative role of active transport (transcytosis) in bulk transvascular protein movement in vivo was evaluated. Using chemical transcytosis inhibition (N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and filipin), we were able to show that NEM actually increases endothelial permeability to macromolecules, probably as a result of unspecific toxic action on endothelial cells. 3. 3. Diffusion in Poly(vinyl alcohol) and Polyethylene as Determined by Computational Simulations and Modeling

    Author : Gunnar Karlsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Molecular dynamics; simulation; modeling; polymer; poly vinyl alcohol ; polyethylene; water; oxygen; limonene; solute; diffusion; transport properties;

    Abstract : Poly(vinyl alcohol) and polyethylene polymer systems werebuilt in order to study their transport properties (diffusion).First a verification of the AMBER force field was conducted fora poly(vinyl alcohol) system built from a chain with 145repeating units. NPT-molecular dynamics simulations attemperatures between 400 and 527 K were performed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Unsaturated Solute Transport in a Semiarid Catchment - Nonlinear Analyses and Modelling

    Author : Pernilla Öhrström; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; teknisk geografi; Hydrogeologi; teknisk geologi; unsaturated zone; Hydrogeology; geographical and geological engineering; solute transport; scaling; soils; semiarid regions; heterogeneity; preferential flow; fractals;

    Abstract : Unsaturated solute transport is highly variable and therefore difficult to predict. In semi-arid areas, where water resources are limited, the presence of macropores is of great importance for crop production. The bromide ion (Br-) and dye tracers are useful for studies of water movement. READ MORE

  5. 5. Stress Effects on Solute Transport in Fractured rocks

    Author : Zhihong Zhao; Lanru Jing; Ivars Neretnieks; Auli Niemi; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fractured rocks; Solute transport; Stress effects; Coupled stress-flow-transport processes; Analytical solution; Particle mechanics model; Fracture surface damage; Discrete element method; Particle tracking method;

    Abstract : The effect of in-situ or redistributed stress on solute transport in fractured rocks is one of the major concerns for many subsurface engineering problems. However, it remains poorly understood due to the difficulties in experiments and numerical modeling. READ MORE
