  1. 1. Air Pollution Dependency on Climate Variability and Source Region : Past, Current and Future Air Pollution Scenarios over Europe

    Author : Camilla Andersson; Hans-Christen Hansson; Christer Johansson; Joakim Langner; David Simpson; Peter Builtjes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acidification; Air Pollution; Climate Change; Europe; Numerical Model; Emission; Eutrophication; Key region; Nitrogen Dioxide; Particulate Matter; PM; Source region; Surface Ozone; Tropospheric Ozone; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The main objectives of this thesis were to investigate the dependency of European air pollution on climate variability and emission source region. Calculations with a chemistry transport model (CTM) were conducted to investigate the influence of climate variability. READ MORE

  2. 2. The fate of airborne lead pollution in boreal forest soils

    Author : Jonatan Klaminder; Ingemar Renberg; John G. Farmer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Air pollution; lead; lead isotopes; peat; forest soil; forest plants;

    Abstract : Lead has a more than three-millennia-long pollution history in Europe. Metal production, burning of coal and use of leaded petrol resulted in a significant pollution of the atmosphere. As a consequence of atmospheric fallout, the Swedish boreal forest is strongly contaminated by airborne lead pollution. READ MORE

  3. 3. Element cycling in forest soils -modelling the effects of a changing environment

    Author : Charlotta Walse; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Chemical technology and engineering; soil moisture; decomposition; base cations; weathering; acidification; scenario analysis; Environmental technology; pollution control; Miljöteknik; kontroll av utsläpp;

    Abstract : Element cycling and nutrient supply in forest ecosystems are of vital importance for short-term productivity and for longer-term land management in terms of nutrient leaching and CO2 fixation. This thesis includes a series of studies with the objective of modelling some aspects of the effect of acidification and climate change on element cycling and nutrient supply in forest soil. 4. 4. Long-term changes of mercury, lead and persistent organic pollutants in arctic environments

    Author : Carola Lindeberg; Ingemar Renberg; Mats Tysklind; Ove Emteryd; Edvard Karlsson; Per Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lake sediment; time trends; chlordane; hexachlorobenzene; mercury; lead; soil; climate changes; Arctic; Greenland; Sweden; Swedish mountains; PCB; PBDE; pesticides; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The Arctic represents a huge area with poor infrastructure contributing to limited possibilities to establish monitoring and research programs. From the investigations that have been performed we know that the arctic environment is affected by anthropogenic emissions from lower latitudes, but knowledge about underlying transport processes, the arctic pollution extent and the rates of changes are limited. 5. 5. Sources of pesticide losses to surface waters and groundwater at field and landscape scales

    Author : Anna Lindahl; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Pesticide residues in groundwater and surface waters may harm aquatic ecosystems and result in a deterioration of drinking water quality. EU legislation and policy emphasize risk management and risk reduction for pesticides to ensure long-term, sustainable use of water across Europe. READ MORE
