  1. 1. Effects of polyamine pool manipulation on genes expressed during the cell cycle

    Author : Pia Berntsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal physiology; cyclin A; ODC; MCF-7; mitotic shake off; DENSPM; CHO; cDNA microarray; cell cycle; spermine; Djurfysiologi; AdoMetDC; 2D gel electrophoresis; polyamines; spermidine; putrescine;

    Abstract : The polyamines - putrescine, spermidine and spermine - are polycations found within cells. They have been shown to be essential for optimal cell proliferation and cell survival. Cells maintain their polyamine levels in a well-regulated system involving biosynthesis, catabolism and uptake/excretion. READ MORE

  2. 2. Calcium channel activity and force regulation in smooth muscle: Effects of polyamines and growth stimulation

    Author : Maria Gomez; Kardiovaskulär forskning - immunitet och ateroskleros; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; verapamil; tissue culture; portal vein; patch-clamp; calcium; spermidine; spermine; polyamines; excitation-contraction; smooth muscle; calcium channel; ionomycin.; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The initial signal for contraction in smooth muscle is an increase in [Ca2+]i. Ca2+ ions can either enter the cytosol from the extracellular medium or be released from intracellular stores. Voltage-operated Ca2+ channels (VOC) play a dominant role in the activation of smooth muscle contraction. READ MORE

  3. 3. Examining the role of metabolism in Myc-driven tumorigenesis

    Author : Tacha Zi Plym Forshell; Jonas Nilsson; Mattias Belting; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cancer; Myc; metabolism; polyamines; spermidine synthase; glycolysis; lactate dehydrogenase; serine metabolism; Phgdh; folate metabolism; Shmt; Pim kinase; Pim-3 Kinase; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Myc transcriptionally regulates genes involved in processes such as cell proliferation, metabolism, differentiation, and angiogenesis.  MYC expression is deregulated in many types of human cancer; therefore discovering the mechanisms behind MYCs role in tumorigenesis is essential. 4. 4. Polyamine Pathway as Drug Target against Malaria

    Author : Janina Sprenger; Biogena aminer; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Amino acid insertions; Crystallography; polyamine pathway; drug design; enzyme inhibition; ITC; ligand binding; malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; S-Adenosylmethionine decarboxylase; spermidine synthase.;

    Abstract : Malaria, caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for about 600.000 death cases every year. Mainly affected are populations of subtropical countries in Africa and the largest groups of victims are children below the age of 5 years. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effects of ethanol on NMDA receptor-mediated functions in primary cultures of cerebellar granule cells

    Author : Aleta Cebere; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Glutamate; NR2A and NR2B subunits; NMDA ethanol; homoquinolinic acid; glycine; spermidine; NMDA receptor antagonists; Ca 21; neurotoxicity; neuroprotection; AP-1; RT-PCR; Western blot; cerebellar granule cells;

    Abstract : Primary cultures of cerebellar granule cells were used to investigate the effects of acute and chronic exposure of ethanol on NMDA receptor functions and to examine the possible sites of interaction between ethanol and the NMDA receptor. Activation of NMDA receptors induced elevation of free cytoplasmic Ca2+, Ca2+ influx, activation of protein kinase C and neurotoxicity. READ MORE
