  1. 1. Growth conditions and individual quality in starlings

    Author : Martin Granbom; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; cost of reproduction; individual quality; long-term effects; early condition; starling; Sturnus vulgaris;

    Abstract : Variation in growth conditions during ontogeny may result in permanent differences in individual quality. This thesis focuses on how starlings are affected by environmental variation during the nestling period. Both landscape differences in food availability and experimental food supplementation affected survival and growth of nestlings. READ MORE

  2. 2. Female reproductive strategies and sexual conflicts in a polygynous mating system

    Author : Maria Sandell; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; female aggression; nestling feeding; intraspecific brood parasitism; mating system; parental investment; sexual conflict; intrasexual competition; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have investigated conflicts of interest in the facultatively polygynous European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) with a focus on female reproductive strategies. The extent to which males provided parental care was a key issue in understanding the mating system of the starling. READ MORE

  3. 3. On starlings and farming: population decline, foraging strategies, cost of reproduction and breeding success

    Author : Måns Bruun; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; breeding success; foraging strategies; intensification; agricultural methods; population decline; farmland bird; cost of reproduction; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : The European Starling Sturnus vulgaris as many other farmland bird species has been declining during the last decades. The cause of these declines is generally believed to be changes with in agricultural methods affecting breeding and survival of birds. READ MORE

  4. 4. Left ventricular function's relation to load, experimental studies in a porcine model

    Author : Roman A'roch; Michael Haney; Jan Poelaert; Lars-Åke Brodin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; heart function; preload; afterload; contractility; myocardial tissue velocity; speckle tracking; Anaesthetics and intensive care; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Loading conditions are recognized to influence ventricular function according to the Starling relationship for length/stretch and force.  Many modern echocardiographic parameters which have been announced as describing ventricular function and contractile status, may be confounded by uncontrolled and unmeasured load.
