  1. 1. Stem cells in the adult heart - 3D culture, isolation of side population cells and search for a stem cell niche

    Author : Kristina Vukusic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heart; cardiac stem cells; Stem cell niche; Atrioventricular junction; Side population; 3D culture;

    Abstract : Cardiac tissue shows a poor regenerative capacity. From 2003 reports, mostly based on animal models, have showed existence of stem cells also in the heart. Using 14C measurements, a slow but steady turnover of the cardiac cells was shown in humans, around 1%/year. As a source for this regeneration endogenous stem cells have been suggested. READ MORE

  2. 2. Regulation of Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells by Bone Marrow Niche Components

    Author : Hong Qian; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stem cell; Hematologi; extracellular fluids; Haematology; bone marrow; Hematopoiesis; extracellulära vätskor;

    Abstract : Throughout the lifespan of an individual, enormous numbers of mature blood cells are generated by hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the bone marrow (BM). The HSC is a cell that can self-renew to maintain the HSC pool and differentiate into all types of mature blood cells. READ MORE

  3. 3. THE HYPOXIC HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELL NICHE Consequences of Hypoxia-induced Transcription on Stem Cell Fate

    Author : Matilda Rehn; Avdelningen för molekylärmedicin och genterapi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hematopoietic Stem Cells; Stem Cell Niche; Hypoxia; Hypoxia-Inducible Factor; Vegfa.;

    Abstract : Hematopoiesis is the process of blood formation that originates with the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC), a cell type that is responsible for the life-long supply of mature blood cells. HSCs are defined by their ability to self-renew as well as giving rise to differentiated cells of all blood lineages. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modeling Neural Stem Cell and Glioma Biology

    Author : Tobias Bergström; Karin Forsberg-Nilsson; Staffan Johansson; Sven Påhlman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neural stem cell; integrins; glioma; PDGF; mast cell; Molekylär cellbiologi; Molecular Cellbiology; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on neural stem cell (NSC) and glioma biology. I discuss how NSCs interact with extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in the stem cell niche, and investigate the consequences of deregulated Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) signaling for embryonic NSCs in transgenic mice. 5. 5. Regulation of normal and cancer cells as a base for cell cycle-targeted therapy

    Author : Regina Miftakhova; Malmö Experimentell cancerforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell cycle regulation; cyclin A1; stem cells; stem cell niche; epigenetics; cancer;

    Abstract : The majority of current treatments used for treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) and leukemia are often limited to a narrow subsets of treated patients. As such, there still remains a significant scope for gaining deeper understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying cancer metastasis for improvement of targeted treatment. READ MORE
