1. Testosterone Analysis in Hair
Abstract : The effects of testosterone in the body are dependent on the concentrations at the target organs, as well as the susceptibility of the androgen receptor. Steroid hormones circulate in the bloodstream bound to proteins, and only a small part is unbound and free to exert its effect at the receptors. READ MORE

2. Female sex hormones and health outcomes in women with specific focus on asthma
Abstract : In humans, gender differences exist across a wide spectrum of diseases. For instance, women are more likely to develop Sjogren’s syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and autoimmune thyroid disease compared to men. READ MORE

3. Functional analysis of ligand recognition by the glucocorticoid receptor
Abstract : The glucocorticoid receptor (GR) is a ligand-inducible transcription factor that belongs to the superfamily of nuclear hormone receptors. It contains three structural and functional domains. READ MORE

4. Endogenous hormones in the etiology of ovarian and endometrial cancers
Abstract : The main purpose of this thesis was to examine the relationship of pre-diagnostic circulating levels of sex-steroids (androgens and estrogens), sex hormone binding globuline (SHBG), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), IGF binding proteins (BP) and C-peptide (as a marker of pancreatic insulin secretion) with risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer. Additionally, the interrelationships of body mass index (BMI), sex-steroids, IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were examined. READ MORE

5. Adaptability of skeletal muscle to hormone treatment in relation to gender and aging
Abstract : The aims of this study were to investigate the expression of myosin isoforms, muscle contractility at the cell level, and changes in these parameters in response to altered hormonal status in aging male and female rodents. In addition, by using mice lacking thyroid hormone receptors (TR[alpha]1 or TR[beta] or TR[alpha]1/[beta]) we tried to improve our understanding of the mechanisms by which thyroid hormone regulates the expression of specific MyHC isoforms via these different nuclear receptors.
