1. Studies on arachidonic acid metabolism in normal and malignant hematopoietic cells
Abstract : This thesis deals with the metabolism of arachidonic acid via the 5-lipoxygenase- and the 15-lipoxygenase-1 pathways in normal and malignant hematopoietic cells. The first part of the thesis (papers I & II) describes the expression of genes involved in arachidonic acid metabolism and the capacity to generate leukotriene (LT) B4 via the 5-lipoxygenase pathway in blood tumor cells from patients with precursor B-ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) and AML (acute myeloid leukemia). 2. Perplexing Protein Puzzles
Abstract : Protein structure and stability are inherent in the amino acid sequence and governed by non-covalent interactions. The cooperation between forces is, however, perplexing and not well understood. In order to elucidate and predict protein folding and stability, detailed studies of non-covalent interactions are required. READ MORE

3. Gastric electrical stimulation. Studies in patients with intractable nausea and vomiting
Abstract : The most severe cases of gastroparesis are refractory to drugs. In the 1990s gastric electrical stimulation (GES) was introduced for treatment of nausea and vomiting in patients with diabetic and idiopathic gastroparesis. The electrodes and neurostimulator are usually placed with laparoscopy. READ MORE

4. Biogeochemical processes in frozen soils : unfrozen water in frozen soils and factors regulating carbon mineralization at low temperatures
Abstract : High latitude ecosystems are important for global carbon (C) balances and are among the most sensitive ecosystems to climate change. Microbial CO2 production in soil is known to proceed at temperatures < 0ºC in these regions and winter CO2 emissions can significantly affect annual C balances. READ MORE
