1. Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy Studies of Na Islands on Graphite, Impurity Interactions on Cu(111) and Low Temperature Structures of S/Cu(111)
Abstract : A scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) can reveal the atomic order of a surface as well as details of its electronic structure. In the present work STM, in combination with core and valence photo-electron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) was applied to three different systems: (i) simple metal quantum wells in the form of Na films and islands on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), (ii) low temperature S/Cu(111) structures discovered in the course of this work and (iii) impurities on Cu(111). 2. Surface Reactivity and Electronic Structure of Metal Oxides
Abstract : The foci of this thesis are the metal oxides Cu2O, ZnO and Fe3O4 and their interaction with water and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The intention is to study SO2-induced atmospheric corrosion on a molecular level. All studies are based on photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements. 3. Understanding the Structure and Reaction of Single Molecules on Metal surfaces from First Principles
Abstract : The study of surface adsorption and reaction is not only interesting from a scientific point of view, but also important in many application fields such as energy, environment, catalysis, corrosion, electronic device, and sensor. Theoretical calculations are essential in these studies. READ MORE
