  1. 1. Streptococcus pneumoniae : epidemiological, clinical and serological studies

    Author : Lars Å. Burman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococcus pneumoniae; incidence; predisposing factors; prognosis; serotyping; etiology of pneumonia; diagnostic methods; COA; CIE; pneumococcal serology;

    Abstract : A retrospective study of invasive pneumococcal disease in patients from Greater Göteborg in 1964- 1980 identified 125 cases of meningitis, 305 of pneumonia, 61 of septicemia with unknown focus, and 17 with other manifestations, all verified by cultures from normally sterile body fluids. The incidence was several times higher in infants and in the elderly than in any other age-group. READ MORE

  2. 2. Superantigens in group A streptococcus : gene diversity and humoral immune response

    Author : Linda Maripuu; Mari Norgren; Susan Hollingshead; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Group A streptococcus; Streptococcus pyogenes; superantigen SAg ; SAg-gene profile; M-protein; emm-genotype; biomedicinsk laboratorievetenskap; biomedical laboratory science;

    Abstract : Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a strictly human pathogen that causes infections ranging from asymptomatic carriage to the highly lethal streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). GAS are classified according to the sequence of the variable 5’ end of the emm-gene that encodes the surface associated M-protein. READ MORE

  3. 3. Quantifying Phagocytosis – studies on the antibody response during invasive streptococcal infections

    Author : Therese de Neergaard; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Phagocytosis; Hill equation; Streptococcus pyogenes GAS ; Streptococcus dysgalactiae; Antibodies; invasive infection; Phagocytosis; Hill equation; Streptococcus pyogenes; Group A Streptococcus; Streptococcus dysgalactiae; Antibodies; Invasive infection;

    Abstract : The interaction between our immune system and pathogens encompasses a complex spectrum from symbiosis to potentially life-threatening diseases. Throughout evolution, our immune system has evolved numerous strategies such as phagocytosis to combat infections and protect us from diseases. READ MORE

  4. 4. Adhesion-related interactions of Actinomyces and Streptococcus biofilm bacteria

    Author : Mirva Drobni; Nicklas Strömberg; Karl-Eric Magnusson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; biofilm; Actinomyces; Streptococcus; adhesion; Cariology; Cariologi;

    Abstract : Adhesion of bacteria is a key event in biofilm formation and is mediated by bacterial adhesins recognising host or bacterial partner receptors. In oral biofilm formation, primary Actinomyces and Streptococcus colonizers adhere to salivary pellicle proteins such as proline-rich proteins (PRPs) as well as to mucosal surfaces. READ MORE

  5. 5. Antibiotic resistance and pathogenesis of Streptococci with focus on Group A Streptococci

    Author : Feiruz Alamiri; Malmö Experimentell infektionsmedicin; []

    Abstract : Multi-drug resistant (MDR) infections remain the leading cause of death worldwide. MDR infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn), Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) and Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) are considered global threats to human health due to increased spread of antibiotic resistance and limited treatment options.
