  1. 1. Earthquake Sources, the Stress Field and Seismic Hazard : A Study in Eritrea and its Surrounding

    Author : Lijam Zemichael Hagos; Roland Roberts; Hossein Shomali; Kuvvet Atakan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Seismic hazard; Focal mechanism; Moment tensor inversion; Stress field; Afar depression; Eritrea; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : Presented in this thesis are some basic concepts and applications of seismic hazard analysis and the elements that influence the amplitude and geometric attenuation of earthquake ground motion. This thesis centers on the identification of the styles of failure, focal mechanisms, and the state of regional stress in the study area. READ MORE

  2. 2. Undrained shear strength in clay slopes - Influence of stress conditions. A model and field test study

    Author : Hjördis Löfroth; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; preconsolidation pressure; piezocone test; slope; model test; consolidation; horizontal stress; clay; undrained shear strength; direct simple shear test; field vane test; field test;

    Abstract : To counteract natural hazards such as landslides, current methods for evaluation of soil properties as a mean for determining the safety level of natural slopes need to be refined. The empirical relationships used for estimation of the undrained shear strength from piezocone and field vane test are based on the stress conditions valid for horizontal ground and normally consolidated or slightly overconsolidated soil. 3. 3. Relaxation and nanomechanical studies of the vickers residual stress field in glass

    Author : Kwadwo O. Kese; Bill Bergman; Sture Hogmak; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials science; soda-lime glass; vickers residual stress field; nanoindentation; stress rekaxatuib; cube corner indenter; Materialvetenskap; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : The Vickers residual stress field (VRSF) in soda-lime glass results from the elastic-plastic contact event that takes place when a Vickers diamond pyramid is loaded onto the surface of the material in an indentation cycle. The importance of elastic-plastic indentation lies in the contact damage that it gives rise to in the surface of the glass. READ MORE

  4. 4. Martensitic Transformations in Steels : A 3D Phase-field Study

    Author : Hemantha Kumar Yeddu; John Ågren; Annika Borgenstam; Yunzhi Wang; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Phase-field method; Martensitic transformations; Plastic de formation; Multi-length scale modeling; Microstructure; Stress states; Steels;

    Abstract : Martensite is considered to be the backbone of the high strength of many commercial steels. Martensite is formed by a rapid diffusionless phase transformation, which has been the subject of extensive research studies for more than a century. READ MORE

  5. 5. Maternal Separation in Rats : An Experimental Model for Long-Term Effects of Early Life Experiences on Neurochemistry, Voluntary Ethanol Intake and Exploration and Risk Assessment Behavior

    Author : Erika Roman; Ingrid Nylander; J. Dee Higley; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical pharmacology; Handling; Maternal Deprivation; Environment; Opioids; Dopamine; Alcohol; Stress; Concentric Square Field; Open Field; Elevated Plus-maze; Farmaceutisk farmakologi; Pharmaceutical pharmacology; Farmaceutisk farmakologi;

    Abstract : The period of early life is important for the development of individual brain function and behavior. Human studies have shown altered vulnerability to develop psychopathology and/or excessive drug intake, possibly leading to dependence, as a consequence of early life experiences. READ MORE
