  1. 1. Controlling Electronic and Geometrical Structure of Honeycomb-Lattice Materials Supported on Metal Substrates : Graphene and Hexagonal Boron Nitride

    Author : Nikolay Vinogradov; Nils Mårtensson; Karsten Horn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; graphene; h-BN; electronic structure; adsorption; doping; nano-templates; PES; NEXAFS; LEEM; STM; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Abstract : The present thesis is focused on various methods of controlling electronic and geometrical structure of two-dimensional overlayers adsorbed on metal surfaces exemplified by graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) grown on transition metal (TM) substrates. Combining synchrotron-radiation-based spectroscopic and various microscopic techniques with in situ sample preparation, we are able to trace the evolution of overlayer electronic and geometrical properties in overlayer/substrate systems, as well as changes of interfacial interaction in the latter. 2. 2. Formation stability and electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces from first principles

    Author : Jochen Rohrer; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; band structure; van der Waals interaction; electronic structure; graphane; graphene; atomic structure; growth; thin film; interface; density functional theory; CVD; Alumina; nucleation;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with two closely interwoven aspects of first-principle(density functional theory) materials modeling:(1)~prediction of atomic structure & chemical composition,and (2)~prediction of electronic properties.In the first part, we focus on atomic structure (AS) and chemical composition (CC) of surface and interface systems. Abstract : During recent years, new types of materials have been discovered with unique properties. One family of such materials are two-dimensional materials, which include graphene and MXene. These materials are stronger, more flexible, and have higher conductivity than other materials. As such they are highly interesting for new applications, e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Building Systems for Electronic Probing of Single Low Dimensional Nano-objects : Application to Molecular Electronics and Defect Induced Graphene

    Author : Syed Hassan Mujtaba Jafri; Klaus Leifer; Aidan Quinn; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Nano-objects have unique properties due to their sizes, shapes and structure. When electronic properties of such nano-objects are used to build devices, the control of interfaces at atomic level is required. READ MORE

  5. 5. Properties and applications of materials based on graphite oxide

    Author : Andreas Nordenström; Aleksandr V. Talyzin; Thomas Wågberg; Andrey Turchanin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Graphene; Graphite Oxide; Graphene Oxide; Swelling; Phase Transition; Intercalation; Activated Graphene; Activated Carbon; Supercapacitors; Neutron Reflectometry;

    Abstract : Graphite oxide (GO) is a hydrophilic, layered material prepared by oxidation of graphite. In the first part of this thesis, we studied materials produced from GO by intercalation and functionalization. The second part of the thesis was focused on supercapacitor applications of high surface area carbons prepared from GO using chemical activation. READ MORE
