  1. 1. Ribosome and ribosomal RNA Structure : An experimental and computational analysis of expansion segments in eukaryotic ribosomal RNA

    Author : Gunnar Alkemar; Odd Nygård; Anders Virtanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; eukaryotes; expansion segment; ribosomes; rRNA; secondary structure; structure of rRNA.; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; cellbiologi; Cellbiology;

    Abstract : Ribosomes are large ribonucleoprotein complexes which incorporate amino acids into peptide chains during translational process in all types of living cells. The eukaryotic ribosome is larger compared to its prokaryotic counterpart. READ MORE

  2. 2. The importance of maturation factors in 30S ribosomal subunit assembly

    Author : Stefan Nord; Mikael Wikström; Dan Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ribosome; 30S; rRNA; RimP; RbfA; C23U; rpsE; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The assembly of the ribosome is a complex process that needs to be highly efficient to support maximum growth. Although the individual subunits of the ribosome can be reconstituted in vitro, such a reaction is inefficient in comparison to the assembly rate in vivo. READ MORE

  3. 3. Determinants of peptidyl-tRNA drop-off from E. coli Ribosomes : Effects of antibiotics, mutations and translation factors

    Author : Reza Karimi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : During protein synthesis, some peptidyl-tRNA molecules dissociate from the ribosomes and become hydrolysed by peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (Pth). Two different in vitro systems, poly(U) and natural mRNA programmed ribosomes, have been used in order to determine dissociation (drop-off) rates of deacylated- and peptidyl-tRNAs from different sites on ribosomes. 4. 4. Causes and consequences of spatial genetic variation in two species of scleractinian coral in East Africa : Levels of genetic differentiation and intraspecific diversity of Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea

    Author : Petra Souter; Mats Grahn; Bertil Borg; Karen Miller; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; population genetics; corals; Kenya; Tanzania; Functional Zoomorphology; funktionell morfologi;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is a study of the spatial genetic structure of two species of scleractinian corals, Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea. The overall objective was to investigate the current capacity of MPAs to preserve and restore coral reefs and to contribute information to improve management decisions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Microbially induced concrete degradation in subsea tunnels - Community structure of biofilms from sprayed reinforced concrete in the Oslofjord tunnel

    Author : Sabina Karacic; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial community structure; concrete deterioration; biocorrosion; 16S rRNA gene sequences; biofilm; subsea tunnel;

    Abstract : Microbially induced concrete deterioration has been discovered in several Norwegian subsea tunnels with significant disintegration of the calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and steel fibre corrosion in areas with leakages of saline groundwater. Complex microbial biofilm activity together with abiotic attack from saline ground water, with high concentrations of Cl−, SO42−, Mg2+ and HCO3−, are responsible for the degradation in the specific subsea tunnel environment.
