  2. 2. Herbivory and plant community structure in a subarctic altitudinal gradient

    Author : Jon Moen; Nancy Huntly; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; arctic and alpine vegetation; competition; exclosures; lemmings; plant defences; plant-plant interactions; Ranunculus glacialis; snow-bed; structuring factors; tall herb meadow; vertebrate grazing; voles;

    Abstract : The object of this thesis was to study plant community structure, especially in relation to vertebrate herbivory, in an altitudinal gradient in the Fennoscandian mountain chain.A sowing experiment in a high alpine Ranunculus glacialis population showed that seeds germinated better in cleared microsites than under established individuals. 3. 3. Phytoplankton drivers in a marine system influenced by allochthonous organic matter – the Baltic Sea

    Author : Joanna Paczkowska; Agneta Andersson; Owen Rowe; Harri Kuosa; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton; nutrients; allochthonous organic matter; humic substances; structuring factors;

    Abstract : Climate change scenarios predict that seawater temperature and precipitation will increase in the Baltic Sea region during the next century. In the northern part of the Baltic Sea, increasing inflows of the terrestrial allochthonous dissolved organic matter (ADOM) are expected to be a major consequence of elevated rainfall, which can alter light and nutrient availability for phytoplankton. 4. 4. Structuring factors for macroinvertebrate communities and the importance for ecosystem processing

    Author : Pia Hertonsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ephemeroptera; competition; Predation risk; brownification; invasive sp.; decomposition; grazing; growth; gastropoda; mortality; amphipoda; isopoda;

    Abstract : Aquatic macroinvertebrates play important roles in our ecosystems and are essential for the ecosystem processing. An improved knowledge of structuring factors, such as competition and predation, and the way in which they operates in the macroinvertebrate community is crucial for our understanding of not only the macroinvertebrates but also the ecosystem in general. 5. 5. Factors structuring Fucus communities at open and complex coastlines in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Martin Isaeus; Lena Kautsky; Johan Ehrlén; Stein Fredriksen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Botany;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with physical factors and biological interactions affecting the distribution of two fucoid species, Fucus vesiculosus and F. serratus, in the Baltic Sea. Studies have been carried out in two quite different environments: an archipelago, and an open rocky coast. READ MORE
