21. Complement aberrations and autoantibodies to complement proteins in relation to disease mechanisms
Abstract : The complement system, a part of the innate immune system with several links to the adaptive immune system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The purpose of this thesis was to document and clarify some of these mechanisms. The thesis is based on four papers (I-IV). READ MORE

22. Lactobacilli expressing antibody fragments against pathogens
Abstract : Adherence to mucosal surfaces has been shown to be of great importance in the pathogenesis of various infections in the gastro-intestinal tract. Live recombinant bacteria can be used to deliver active or passive immunity at the mucosal surface, which is the site of entry for the majority of the pathogens. READ MORE

24. T cells in atherogenesis
Abstract : The work of this thesis aims to answer the following questions: (1) Which role do CD4+ cells play in atherosclerosis? (2) Is the expression of CD4 essential for the athero-protective effect mediated by immunization with oxidized LDL by adjuvant? (3) How does the antigenspecific T cell response to oxidized LDL influence lesion development? (4) Is there a general shift to Th2 responses in severe hypercholesterolemia? and finally (5) Which role does transforming growth factor-B (TGF-B)-signaling in T cells play in atherogenesis? ApoE-/-CD4-/- mice were used to study the effect of CD4 deficiency in atherosclerosis. The development of atherosclerosis was decreased with attenuated inflammation in apoE-/- mice lacking CD4+ cells compared to immunocompetent apoE-/-. READ MORE

25. Immune and autoimmune responses to HIV-1 in mucosa and other tissues
Abstract : The aim of these studies was to evaluate routes and devices for administration of HIV-1 DNA vaccines. In particular we were interested in mucosal routes for the induction of immunity at mucosal surfaces. We studied the effects of a novel mucosal route, jet-injection, for induction of systemic and local responses. READ MORE
