1. Building Blocks for the Assembly of Nanostructures
Abstract : The natural world and many man made technologies are driven by self-assembly, involving the autonomous organization of individual components as a result of specific local interactions into functional structures. Self-assembly is a platform from which to construct materials with a high complexity, in high precision, with an inbuilt error- correction system due to its dynamic nature. READ MORE

2. Some Aspects of Nucleic Acids Chemistry
Abstract : This thesis is divided into two parts based on a total of 8 papers: Part 1: Synthesis, physicochemical and biochemical studies of chemically modified oligonucleotides and their duplexes and triplexes. Potency of the chromophore conjugated DNA oligonucleotides as antigene and antisense gene repressors was evaluated. READ MORE

3. UDP-sugar metabolizing pyrophosphorylases in plants : formation of precursors for essential glycosylation-reactions
Abstract : UDP-sugar metabolizing pyrophosphorylases provide the primary mechanism for de novo synthesis of UDP-sugars, which can then be used for myriads of glycosyltranferase reactions, producing cell wall carbohydrates, sucrose, glycoproteins and glycolipids, as well as many other glycosylated compounds. The pyrophosphorylases can be divided into three families: UDP-Glc pyrophosphorylase (UGPase), UDP-sugar pyrophosphorylase (USPase) and UDP-N-acety lglucosamine pyrophosphorylase (UAGPase), which can be discriminated both by differences in accepted substrate range and amino acid sequences. 4. Studies of oligosaccharides and carbon-13 enriched bacterial polysaccharides using NMR spectroscopy and computer simulations
Abstract : The conformation and dynamics of the trisaccharide methyl β-D-Glcp-(1--> 2)[β-D-Glcp-(1 --> 3)] α-D-Manp and its constituent disaccharides methyl β-D-Glcp-(1 --> 2) α-D-Manp and methyl β-D-Glcp-(1 --> 3) α-D-Manp have been studied using computer simulations and NMR spectroscopy. The computer simulations applied were Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations employing the HSEA force field and Langevin dynamics simulations using the PARM22 and CHEAT95 force fileds. READ MORE

5. Transition Metal Catalysis for Selective Synthesis and Sustainable Chemistry
Abstract : This thesis discusses the preparation and use of transition-metal catalysts for selective organic chemical reactions. Specifically, two different matters have been studied; the asymmetric hydrogenation of carbon-carbon double bonds using N,P-ligated iridium catalysts and the metal-catalyzed transfer of small molecules from biomass to synthetic intermediates.
