  1. 1. Ultrastructural Aspects of Pulp Fibers as Studied by Dynamic FT-IR Spectroscopy

    Author : Margaretha Åkerholm; KTH; []
    Keywords : cellulose; cooperation; crystallinity; dynamic test; glucomannan; hardwood; holocellulose; humidity; infrared spectroscopy; kraft pulp; lignin; mechanical pulp; orientation; polarised light; softwood; strain; sulphite pulp; viscoelasticity; xylan;

    Abstract : Dynamic (or 2D) FT-IR spectroscopy in combination withpolarized IR irradiation has been used in this work to studywood polymer orientation and interactions on theultrastructural level in wood fibers in the native state aswell as the effects of different pulping processes. The woodpolymer interactions were studied under both dry and humidconditions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Mechanical Pulp-Based Nanocellulose : Processing and applications relating to paper and paperboard, composite films, and foams

    Author : Sinke Henshaw Osong; Per Engstrand; Sven Norgren; Mark Martinez; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; mechanical pulp; thermo-mechanical pulp; chemi-thermomechanical pulp; fractionation; fines; homogenisation; nanocellulose; nano-ligno-cellulose; microfibrillated cellulose; nanofibrillated cellulose; paper; strength properties; crill; TEMPO; nanographite NG ; composite films;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with processing of nanocellulose originating from pulps, with focus on mechanical pulp fibres and fines fractions. The nanocellulose materials produced within this research project were tested for different purposes ranging from strength additives in paper and paperboard products, via composite films to foam materials. 3. 3. Pulp displacement washing - An investigation of the influence of fibre and bed properties using a novel measurment technique

    Author : Jenny Lindau; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; displacement washing; pulp properties.; measurement technique; compression; dispersion; fibre damage; local properties; kraft pulp;

    Abstract : There are many incentives for making the pulp washing process as efficient as possible: an efficient separation of the pulp from the black liquor will increase energy efficiency, reduce costs by minimizing the need for make-up chemicals and improve the bleaching process. Research in this area has, however, been more or less neglected and in the existing literature there are many discrepancies as to how different parameters influence the washing process. READ MORE

  4. 4. Low consistency refining of mechanical pulp : process conditions and energy efficiency

    Author : Stefan Andersson; Per Engstrand; Christer Sandberg; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mechanical pulping; low consistency refining; energy efficiency; rotor position; plate gap; fibre concentration;

    Abstract : The thesis is focussed on low consistency (LC) refining of mechanical pulp. Theresearch included evaluations of energy efficiency, development of pulpproperties, the influence of fibre concentration on LC refining and effects of rotorposition in a two-zoned LC refiner. READ MORE

  5. 5. Reduction of refining energy during mechanical pulping : using pressurised chip compression and sulphite pre-treatment

    Author : Erik Nelsson; Geoffrey Daniel; Mittuniversitetet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Chip pre-treatment; double disc refiner; energy efficiency; Impressafiner; low dosage; Norway spruce; refining intensity; single disc refiner; sulphite pre-treatment; thermomechanical pulp;

    Abstract : The effects of pressurised compressive chip pre-treatment and low dosage sulphite pre-treatment were evaluated for production of thermomechanical pulp in mill scale trials using Norway spruce (Picea abies) at the Braviken paper mill (Holmen Paper AB, Sweden). The general aim of the study was to improve the energy efficiency during the production of mechanical pulps suitable for news and improved news grade papers. READ MORE
