  1. 1. Building crystals out of crystals : Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles and self-assembled mesocrystals

    Author : Erik Wetterskog; Lennart Bergström; Markus Niederberger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; iron oxide; nanoparticle; synthesis; self-assembly; characterization; electron microscopy; scattering; magnetic properties; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on the fabrication and characterization of self-assembled arrays of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe1-xO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of spherical and cubic iron oxide nanocrystals, with sizes between 5 and 30 nm and narrow size distributions, is demonstrated, along with a rigorous morphological characterization of the cubic nanoparticles. 2. 2. Heterogeneous Photolytic Synthesis of Nanoparticles

    Author : Oscar Alm; Klaus Piglmayer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Chemistry; LCVD; Nanotechnology; Metallocene; Magnetic; Photolysis; OES; tungsten oxide; gas sensing; Kemi;

    Abstract : Nanoparticles of iron, cobalt and tungsten oxide were synthesised by photolytic laser assisted chemical vapour deposition (LCVD). An excimer laser (operating at 193 nm) was used as an excitation source. The LCVD process, was monitored in situ by optical emission spectroscopy (OES). READ MORE

  3. 3. Colloidal synthesis of metal oxide nanocrystals and thin films

    Author : Fredrik Söderlind; Per-Olov Käll; Kajsa Uvdal; Mats Johnsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanoparticles; synthesis; contrast agents; functionalization; thin films; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : A main driving force behind the recent years’ immense interest in nanoscience and nanotechnology is the possibility of achieving new material properties and functionalities within, e.g., material physics, biomedicine, sensor technology, chemical catalysis, energy storing systems, and so on. 4. 4. Synthesis, characterisation and applications of iron oxide nanoparticles

    Author : German Salazar Alvarez; Manoun Muhammed; Jarl B. Rosenholm; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials science; biochemistry; electricity and magnetism; optics; Materialvetenskap; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Further increase of erbium concentrations in Er-doped amplifiers and lasers is needed for the design of efficient, reliable, compact and cost-effective components for telecommunications and other photonic applications. However, this is hindered by Er concentration dependent loss mechanism known as upconversion. READ MORE

  5. 5. Design and characterization of nanoparticles and their assemblies : Transmission electron microscopy investigations from atomic to mesoscopic length scales

    Author : Arnaud Mayence; Lennart Bergström; Liberato Manna; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanoparticles; electron microscopy; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful and versatile tool for investigating nanomaterials. In this thesis, various transmission electron microscopy techniques are used to study the chemical and structural features of different types of inorganic nanoparticles of well-defined morphologies as well as their assemblies.
