  1. 1. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects

    Author : Grethe Neumann Andersen; Solbritt Rantapää Dahlqvist; Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Sören Jacobsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic sclerosis; interstitial lung disease; MMP-9; Th1 Th2; transcription factors; NO; iNOS; E-selectin; endothelium-dependent dilation; endothelium-independent dilation.; Rheumatology; Reumatologi;

    Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 2. 2. Systemic effects of occupational exposure to arsenic : with special reference to peripheral circulation and nerve function

    Author : Birgitta Json Lagerkvist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Arsenic toxicity; Cold-induced vasospasm; Finger systolic pressure; Nerve conduction velocity; Occupational exposure; Raynaud s phenomenon; Serotonin antagonist;

    Abstract : Smelter workers who were exposed to air-borne arsenic for a mean of 23 years, and age-matched referents, were examined with clinical, physiological, and neurophysiological methods. Exposure to arsenic in workroom air was estimated to have been around the Swedish occupational limits, which were 500 yg/m before 1975 and 50 yg/ra thereafter. READ MORE

  3. 3. Systemic effects after ionizing radiation exposure: Genome-wide transcriptional analysis of mouse normal tissues exposed to (211)At, (131)I, or 4 MV photon beam

    Author : Britta Langen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microarray; radiogenomics; systemic effects; biomarker; radionuclide therapy; radionuclide therapy;

    Abstract : The radionuclides 131I and 211At are used or proposed for a variety of cancer treatments. Both radiohalogens exhibit considerable uptake in the thyroid gland and–to a lower degree–in various other tissues if they are unbound or released from a cancer-targeting agent. READ MORE

  4. 4. Systemic fungal diseases in natural plant populations

    Author : Anders Wennström; Lars Ericson; Peter G. Ayres; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Systemic diseases; rust; smut; Puccinia minussensis; Lactuca sibirica; Puccinia pulsatillae; Pulsatilla pratensis; lateral growth; abiotic factors; disease transmission; Svampsjukdomar hos växter;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to study interactions between systemic fungal diseases and perennial plants. Using the systemic rust Puccinia minussensis on the host plant Lactuca sibirica, and the rust Puccinia pulsatillae on the host plant Pulsatilla pratensis, this thesis focused on: (i) the effects of systemic diseases on their hosts (ii) host and pathogen responses to abiotic factors, (iii) the importance of life history strategies for understanding host-pathogen interactions, and (iv) the evolutionary consequences of living in close associations.
