  1. 1. Studies on Vitamin B12 and Folate Deficiency Markers in the Elderly : A Population-based Study

    Author : Karin Björkegren; Kurt Svärdsudd; Åke Schwan; Herman Nilsson-Ehle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Cobalamin; folate; MMA; tHcy; multivitamin; symptoms; survey; treatment trial; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Family Medicine; Allmänmedicin;

    Abstract : The aims of this study were to document the levels of cobalamin, folate, methylmalonic acid (MMA) and total homocysteine (tHcy) in serum and their relations to symptoms, clinical findings, and other factors in order to improve the possibilities of detecting early deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate, and to study the effects of cobalamin and folic acid treatment over a three-year period. The study population consisted of a 20% random sample of persons 70 years or older living in Älvkarleby in mid-Sweden. READ MORE

  2. 2. Homocysteine in cardiovascular disease with special reference to longitudinal changes

    Author : Johan Hultdin; Torbjörn Nilsson; Bertil Kågedal; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; homocysteine; methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase MTHFR ; first-ever stroke; first-ever myocardial infarction; longitudinal; prospective; risk factor; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Abnormalities in homocysteine metabolism have been suggested as risk factors for stroke and myocardial infarction. In retrospective studies, elevated levels of total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and/or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T polymorphism have indicated an increase in risk. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic variation in the folate receptor-alpha and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase genes as determinants of plasma homocysteine concentrations

    Author : Anna Böttiger; Torbjörn Nilsson; Henrik Zetterberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Folate receptor-alpha; Folate; FOLR1; Haplotypes; Homocysteine; Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase; MTHFR; Polymorphisms; Pyrosequencing®; SSCP; Medicine; Medicin; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Abstract : Elevated total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and neurocognitive disease such as dementia. The B vitamins folate and B12 are the main de terminants of tHcy. tHcy concentration can also be affected by mutations in genes coding for receptors, enzymes and transporters important in the metabolism of Hcy. 4. 4. Vitamin B12 and folate depletion in the elderly. Diagnosis, clinical correlates and causes

    Author : Catharina Lewerin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; aged; methylmalonic acid; homocysteine; vitamin B12; folic acid; renal function; cognition; movement; atrophic gastritis;

    Abstract : Subclinical vitamin B12 and folate deficiency is common in the elderly. The clinical significance remains unresolved. There is not a universally accepted set of laboratory criteria for diagnosis, however subclinical deficiency is important to diagnose since it is easy to treat. READ MORE

  5. 5. The impact of homocysteine and B vitamins on Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive performance and structural brain changes

    Author : Babak Hooshmand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Alzheimer’s disease;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the relation of homocysteine (tHcy), vitamin B12, and folate with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), cognitive performance, and structural brain changes in population-based studies of Finnish and Swedish elderly individuals. Study I. READ MORE
