  1. 1. Possibilities of using thermal mass in buildings to save energy, cut power consumption peaks and increase the thermal comfort

    Author : Jonathan Karlsson; Avdelningen för Byggnadsmaterial; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; concrete; aggregates; heat capacity; thermal properties; thermal conductivity; thermal inertia; thermal mass; time constant; Energy storage;

    Abstract : The aim of this project was to generate knowledge to enable us to take advantage of heat storage in heavy building structures with regard to as energy savings, better thermal indoor climate, and reduced peak powers. This could include buildings that can function without energy input during cold periods, buildings that give a robust indoor climate without installed cooling, and buildings with good thermal comfort also in case of higher outdoor temperatures resulting from global warming. 2. 2. Influence of thermal mass on the heating and cooling demands of a building unit

    Author : Fredrik Ståhl; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; thermal mass; environmental impact; thermal comfort; heat storage; life cycle; building energy use; earth tube heat exchanger; comfort interval; heavy or light buildings; building structure;

    Abstract : The purpose of this work is to find to what extent the thermal properties of the building materials, the allowed indoor temperature swing, determined by the comfort interval, and, to some extent, the ventilation strategy can affect the heating and cooling demand of a building. It is well known that a thermally heavy building, that is a building with a high heat capacity, often demands less energy for heating and cooling and have a more stabile indoor temperature due to heat storage in the building structure. 3. 3. Prediction of power and energy use in dwellings : Addressing apects of thermal mass and occupant behaviour

    Author : Victor Fransson; Avdelningen för Installations- och klimatiseringslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Byggnadssimulering; Termisk massa; Värmetröghet; boendes beteende; hushållsel; varmvatten; building simulation; thermal mass; thermal inertia; occupant behaviour; household electricity; domestic hot water;

    Abstract : Households are responsible for approximately 26 % of the annual energy use in the EU. Following the EU-directives regarding energy performance in buildings, international initiatives have been taken in Europe to help countries to define and include guidelines in their own building codes, for example, to establish the concept of zero energy buildings, ZEBs. 4. 4. Rock Mass Response to Coupled Mechanical Thermal Loading : Äspö Pillar Stability Experiment, Sweden

    Author : J. Christer Andersson; Håkan Stille; Charles Fairhurst; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Yielding; Spalling; Rock mass strength; Confinement; Fracturing; Tensile failure; Shear failure; Displacement; Acoustic Emission; Heating; Stress; Back calculation; Radial expansion; Mining engineering; Gruvteknik;

    Abstract : The geological disposal of nuclear waste, in underground openings and the long-term performance of these openings demand a detailed understanding of fundamental rock mechanics. A full scale field experiment: Äspö Pillar Stability Experiment was conducted at a depth of 450 m in sparsely fractured granitic rock to examine the rock mass response between two deposition holes. 5. 5. Thermally Conductive High-Density Polyethylene Composites for Ground Heat Exchangers

    Author : Adib Kalantar Mehrjerdi; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; High-density polyethylene; talc; thermal conductivity; thermal diffusivity; thermal stability; melt rheology; oxidation induction time; α relaxation; strain hardening;

    Abstract : Today, the energy used for the heating and cooling of offices, shopping centres, schools, residential areas, andother buildings is as large as 50% of the total energy consumption in the world. The climate change, globalwarming, and environmental issues have forced high requirements for energy efficiency and clean energyproduction in buildings. READ MORE
