  1. 1. Tracking single molecules in uncharted territory : A single-molecule method to study kinetics in live bacteria

    Author : Javier Aguirre Rivera; Magnus Johansson; Dmitri N. Ermolenko; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; single-molecule; protein synthesis; fluorescence microscopy; antibiotics; aminoglycosides; macrolides; apramycin; gentamicin; paromomycin; S13; translation; bacteria; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : The synthesis of proteins, also known as translation, is a fundamental process in every living organism. The steps in the translation of genetic information to functional proteins have been meticulously studied, mostly using in vitro techniques, yielding a detailed model of their mechanisms. READ MORE

  2. 2. Factors influencing the biogeography of bacteria in fresh waters - a metacommunity approach

    Author : Jürg Brendan Logue; Eva S. Lindström; Silke Langenheder; Lars Tranvik; Byron Crump; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteria; diversity; richness; community composition; dispersal; metacommunity; fresh water; biogeography; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Abstract : One of ecology’s primary goals is to comprehend biodiversity and its patterns of distribution over space and time. Since microorganisms play a pivotal role in key ecological processes, the diversity of microbial communities may have important implications for the stability and functioning of Earth’s ecosystems. Abstract : Antibiotic resistances are one of the biggest threats to global health and if we don’t change our behavior and way of using antibiotics we will end up in a ‘post-antibiotic era’, in which common infections and minor injuries can once kill again and up to 10 million deaths per year may occur by 2050. Therefore, there is a high need for new anti-bacterial drugs, especially of alternatives to existing antibiotics with already described resistances. READ MORE

  4. 4. Porphyrins and heme in microorganisms : Porphyrin content and its relation to phototherapy and antimicrobial treatments in vivo and in vitro

    Author : Jonas Fyrestam; Conny Östman; Jonas Bergquist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Porphyrins; heme; phototherapy; antimicrobial resistance; singlet oxygen; photosensitizer; bacteria; HPLC-MS MS; oral bacteria; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans; Porphyromonas gingivalis; Escherichia coli; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : One of the greatest threats to human health is increasing antimicrobial resistance among pathogens, and finding alternatives for treatment of bacterial infections is of highest importance together with a more controlled use of antibiotics. Porphyrins and heme have both been shown to be a promising class of compounds for inactivation of bacteria; porphyrins by their excellent properties to act as a photosensitizer, and heme by its importance as an iron source during a bacterial infection in vertebrates.
