  1. 1. Lithium and brain plasticity - studies on glial cell changes and electroconvulsive treatment-induced amnesia in rats

    Author : Karin Orre; Enheten för psykiatrisk neuromodulering (PNU); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lithium; electroconvulsive seizures; mood disorder; gliogenesis; amnesia; oligodendrogenesis; myelination; NG2 cells;

    Abstract : Depression and bipolar disorder, collectively known as mood disorders, are devastating, common and often chronic illnesses. Imaging studies of patients with mood disorders have demonstrated structural changes in several brain regions implicated in mood regulation. READ MORE

  2. 2. On laminins and laminin receptors and their roles in regeneration and myelination of the peripheral nerve

    Author : Wilhelm Wallquist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Motoneuron; dorsal root ganglion neuron; integrin; laminin; Schwann cell; Sciatic nerve; regeneration; myelination; in situ hybridization; immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.;

    Abstract : One important prerequisite for successful axon regeneration is that appropriate extracellular molecules are available for outgrowing axons and that receptors for such molecules are found in the regenerating neuron. Laminin associated integrin subunits alpha3, alpha6, alpha7 and beta1 mRNAs are here shown to be present in rat motoneurons, and in the case of integrin subunits alpha7 and gamma1, also immunohistochemical (IHC) labelling of the proteins was demonstrated. 3. 3. Molecular studies of hypothalamic food intake regulating systems and central myelination in two anorectic mouse models

    Author : Ulrika Bergström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to increase the understanding of the hypothalamic mechanisms that are vital for food intake regulation, in particular as it relates to anorexia, and the molecular mechanisms underlying myelination and nodal/paranodal domain organization. The majority of the thesis concerns the anorectic phenotype of two mouse models for which we have found both great similarities and differences pointing to different mechanisms generating similar symptoms and neuropeptidergic alterations. 4. 4. Cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage and post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation in preterm infants: new mechanistic insights and potential treatment strategies

    Author : Olga Romantsik; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prematurity; Intraventricular hemorrhage; Post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; White matter injury; Gray matter injury; Preterm rabbits; Extracellular hemoglobin; a-1-microglobulin; animal IVH models; High frequency ultrasound; MRI; corticogenesis;

    Abstract : Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is one of the major co-morbidities of premature birth associated with post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) development, long-term neurodevelopmental impairment, behavioral problems, special educational needs, and dependency on social security.Hypothesis and aims: We believe that extravasated blood and further release of extracellular hemoglobin (Hb) are crucial in brain injury following IVH and consequent development of PHVD. 5. 5. On the relation between nerve fibres and glial cells

    Author : Carl Bjartmar; W. F. Blakemore; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The general aim of this study is to generate knowledge on the normal axo-glial relations in developing and adult vertebrate white matter. CNS and PNS specimens from developing and mature rats and from chickens of various ages were analysed through electron microscopy of single and serial sections, or through immunohistochemistry.
