  1. 1. Biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    Author : Arvin Behzadi; Karin Forsberg; Anton E. Tjust; Anna Wuolikainen; Per Zetterström; Lars-Owe D. Koskinen; Andreas Puschmann; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; biomarkers; neurofilaments; cytokines; troponin; cystatin C; Neurology; neurologi;

    Abstract : Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by loss of upper and lower motor neurons, leading to paresis, muscle atrophy, and respiratory failure. ALS can be difficult to diagnose and prognosticate early. READ MORE

  2. 2. Building muscle : a translation of training adaptation

    Author : Niklas Boman; Michael Svensson; Jonas Burén; Henrik Antti; Eva Jansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Training; adaptation; muscle; human; hypertrophy; testosterone; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : Training is preparation for what is expected to come through utilization of the plastic and resistive features of nature, known as adaptation. As such, training in humans may have a number of desired goals. These are typically related to sports performance or education. Whatever the goal, a plan needs to be made for reaching it. READ MORE

  4. 4. Exercise-induced muscle soreness : a qualitative and quantitative study of human muscle morphology and function

    Author : Jan Fridén; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Human; exercise; exertion; eccentric contractions; muscles; muscle strength; muscle soreness; fibre types; myofibrils; muscle proteins; histocy to chemistry; ultrastructure; stereology;

    Abstract : Exercise-induced muscle soreness is characterized by stiffness, tenderness and pain during active movements and weakness of the affected musculature the days after unusually or particularly heavy work. The most pronounced subjective symptoms do not arise immediately but rather between a couple of hours to some days after the exercise (a delayed-onset of muscle soreness), the intensity of pain is greatest about 48 hours after the work. 5. 5. Blood Flow in Human Skeletal Muscle : The Effect of Adrenaline and the Influence of a Small Muscle Injury

    Author : Torbjörn Vedung; Jan Henriksson; Jan Lundvall; Södersjukhuset Karolinska Institutet. Dept of Hand Surgery Dept of Physiology and Pharmacology; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adrenaline; blood flow; blood redistribution; ischemia; muscle injury; skeletal muscle; strain-gauge plethysmography; sympathetic tone; transmural pressure; 99mTechnetium clearance; tennis elbow; venous compliance; venous occlusion plethysmography; 133Xenon clearance; adrenaline;

    Abstract : A variety of vasoregulatory systems are involved in the complex control of blood flow inhuman skeletal muscle. The interaction between these systems where one system canoverride or modify the other makes blood flow regulation complicated. READ MORE
