  1. 1. Experiments on biofilm formation and growth in laminar flows

    Author : Cornelius Wittig; Shervin Bagheri; Thomas Crouzier; Wouter van der Wijngaart; Eleonora Secchi; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biofilm; streamers; wall shear stress; OCT; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : The interaction between fluid dynamics and biofilm growth plays a key role in both medical and industrial applications. Biofilms, or bacteria that are embedded in a protective matrix of extracellular polymeric substances, settle on interfaces such as on implanted devices or ship hulls. READ MORE

  2. 2. Prevention of Biofilm Formation on Silicone Rubber Materials for Outdoor High Voltage Insulators

    Author : Sevil Atari Jabarzadeh; Sigbritt Karlsson; Ferruccio Doghieri; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; High voltage insulator; silicone rubber; biofouling; biofilm; biocide; superhydrophobicity; self-cleaning; hierarchical roughness;

    Abstract : Microbial colonization on the surface of silicone rubber high voltage outdoor insulators often results in the formation of highly hydrated biofilm that influence the surface properties, such as surface hydrophobicity. The loss of hydrophobicity might lead to dry band formation, and, in the worst cases, flashover and failure of the insulator. READ MORE

  3. 3. Biofilm adhesion on silicone materials

    Author : Sevil Atarijabarzadeh; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Silicone composite high voltage insulators are sometimes contaminated by microorganisms in outdoor applications, which results in the insulator becoming conductive and thereafter failure of the insulators. In this work, it has been tried to develop silicone materials with antimicrobial properties. READ MORE

  4. 4. Antibiotic resistance and pathogenesis of Streptococci with focus on Group A Streptococci

    Author : Feiruz Alamiri; Malmö Experimentell infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotika resistens; Bröstmjölk; Luftvägsinfektioner; Biofilm bildning; Internalisering; Persistens; HAMLET; Streptokocker; kolonisering; Streptococcus pneumoniae; biofilm formation; Internalisation; Persistence; Antibiotic resistance; Streptococcus pyogenes; Streptococcus agalactiae; HAMLET; Breast milk; Proteome; Virulence factors; Colonization;

    Abstract : Multi-drug resistant (MDR) infections remain the leading cause of death worldwide. MDR infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn), Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) and Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) are considered global threats to human health due to increased spread of antibiotic resistance and limited treatment options. 5. 5. Microbial biofilms on peritoneal dialysis catheters

    Author : Maria Pihl; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Peritoneal dialysis; Biofilm;

    Abstract : Då njurarna slutar fungera produceras ingen urin, och avfallsprodukterna stannar kvar i blodet. Detta tillstånd kallas uremi (”urin i blodet”) och leder till döden om det inte behandlas. Det finns två artificiella sätt att rena blodet på, hemodialys och peritonealdialys. READ MORE
