1. Synthesis of Conjugated Polymers and Small Molecules for Organic Light-Emitting Devices and Photodetectors
Abstract : Production cost and environmental impact are the two major concerns that are related to the conventional optoelectronic devices. It is desirable for the modern semiconductors that they are free of toxic/costly metals, they can be processed with low-cost solution-based methods, and their optical, electronic, and mechanical properties can be easily tuned depending on the target application. 2. Tailoring Fluorescent Probes for Organelle-Specific Imaging and Sensing
Abstract : Exploring and visualizing biological and pathological processes in living cells are useful for both fundamental research and applications. An understanding on the molecular level for these processes with focus on tracking biomarkers, collecting information about their surroundings, and uncovering essential molecular pathways and functions in live cells are of vital interest for cell biological study and clinical diagnosis application. 3. Imaging and Spectroscopic Mapping of Blood Cell Activity : Nanoparticles and Neutrophil Extracellular Traps
Abstract : Imaging and visualization of cell activity when exposed to nanomaterial are of main importance, when investigating biological response to a wide range of biomaterials from medical implants to smart nanoprobes. The ability to provide molecular and chemical information with spatial resolution in the region of sub-µm leads to increased insight and understanding of these biological challenges. READ MORE

4. Mixture toxicity of pesticides and biological effects in agricultural streams : field and laboratory studies
Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to examine pesticide mixture toxicity and its effects on aquatic biota in agricultural streams. This was accomplished by (1) calculating the ΣTUs for algae and Daphnia magna and a pesticide toxicity index (PTI) based on water quality standards (WQS) for long-term monitoring data (2002-2010), (2) by performing algal inhibition tests with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, using both collected in situ water samples and reconstituted water spiked with field-observed pesticide mixtures, and (3) by studying seasonal changes in macroinvertebrate and diatom communities during 2008 in four agricultural streams and determine a set of community-based metrics such as species richness, diversity, ASPT, SPEAR and IPS. 5. Methane oxidation over palladium oxide. From electronic structure to catalytic conversion
Abstract : Understanding how catalysts work down to the atomic level can provide ways to improve chemical processes on which our contemporary economy is heavily reliant. The oxidation of methane is one such example, which is important from an environmental point of view. READ MORE
