1. Studies on effects of antioxidants on arterial thrombosis and endothelial cell injury : With special reference to Tocopherols and ApoA1 Milano
Abstract : Coronary arterial endothelial injury and thrombosis are believed to be critical factors in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). Experimental studies have provided evidence for au inverse relation between acute coronary events and antioxidant intake. READ MORE

2. Effects of Antioxidant and Lipid Lowering Treatment on Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease : With special reference to Mixed Tocopherols and Stable Fish Oil
Abstract : Vitamin E in food, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and lipid lowering treatment with statins have been found to decrease the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cardiac death. However, clinical trials revealed no beneficial effect of intake of alpha-tocopherol alone. READ MORE

3. Studies on Cell Injury Induced by Hypoxia-Reoxygenation and Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein : With Special Reference to the Protectiove Effect of Mixed Tocopherols, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Transforming Growth Factor-beta1
Abstract : Hypoxia-reoxygenation (H-R) injury is an important clinical phenomenon in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Endothelial injury is a critical step in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. Therefore, endothelial and cardiomyocyte protection has been considered an effective step in prevention and treatment of CAD. READ MORE

4. Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web
Abstract : The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. 5. Supercritical fluid extraction of bioactive compounds from berry seeds
Abstract : Industrial processing of berries into food and beverages generates seeds as a by-product. Most of these seeds are treated as waste even though they contain valuable biological compounds. An approach to adding value to the process is to extract these compounds from the seeds. READ MORE
