  1. 1. The interplay of ions in the stimulation of the pancreatic -cell

    Author : Michael Eberhardson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; diabetes; pancreatic β-cells; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; glucose; tetrodotoxin; tolbutamide; veratridine; tetraethylammonium; quinine; cesium; H2DIDS; furosemide; transients; microfluorometry; fura-2; MQAE; calcium channels; potassium channels; sodium channels; chloride channels; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Glucose stimulation of insulin release is mediated by depolarisation of the pancreatic β-cells with accompanying entry of Ca2+ through voltage-dependent channels. An important feature of the glucose-induced depolarisation is its rhythmicity causing oscillations of the cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), which trigger pulsatile release of insulin. 2. 2. Pulsatile insulin release from single islets of Langerhans

    Author : Johanna Westerlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; islets of Langerhans; insulin; ELISA; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; type 2 diabetes; glucose; diazoxide; potassium; tolbutamide; DNP; antimycin A; iodoacetamide; microfluorometry; fura-2; KATP channels; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Insulin release from single islets of Langerhans is pulsatile. The secretory activities of the islets in the pancreas are coordinated resulting in plasma insulin oscillations. Nutrients amplitude-regulate the insulin pulses without influencing their frequency. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cell-Specific Ca2+ Response in Pancreatic ß-cells

    Author : Natalia Gustavsson; Per Lindström; Peter Bergsten; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; heterogeneity; individual ß-cells; islets of Langerhans; cytoplasmic calcium; repetitive glucose stimulation; lag-time; cell-specific; glyceraldehyde; ketoisocaproic acid; tolbutamide; mitochondrial metabolism; Histology; Histologi;

    Abstract : Pancreatic ß-cells are heterogeneous in their secretory responsiveness, glucose sensitivity and metabolic rate. A diminished and delayed first-phase insulin release is an early sign of failing ß-cells in diabetes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular mechanisms involved in the generation of calcium signals in insulin secreting cells

    Author : Kalaiselvan Krishnan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Intracellular Ca 2+ regulates diverse cellular functions in almost all the cells. In the pancreatic ß-cells, Ca 2+ signals are critical for insulin secretion. An increase in the cytoplasmic free Ca 2+ concentration ([Ca 2+ ]i) triggers insulin secretion. READ MORE

  5. 5. Influence of metabolic disturbance on nervous function : clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Lars Hyllienmark; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The present work consists of clinical and experimental studies and describes some effects of metabolic disturbance on nervous function. It is an electrophysiological examination of both single cells and patients exposed to metabolic insult or disease. READ MORE
