  1. 1. Algal-Bacterial Photobioreactors for the Degradation of Toxic Organic Pollutants

    Author : Raul Munoz; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; symbiosis.; nutrient removal; heavy metals removal; Algal-bacterial systems photobioreactors; toxic organic pollutants;

    Abstract : The aerobic biodegradation of toxic organic volatile contaminants is always limited by the low aqueous solubility of O2. Therefore, intensive bubbling or surface aeration is required to supply the bacterial community with sufficient O2 to carry out pollutant mineralization. This can cause the hazardous volatilization of toxic volatile contaminants. READ MORE

  2. 2. Human exposure to persistent organic pollutants : Illustrated by four case studies in Europe

    Author : Jana Weiss; Åke Bergman; Janice Huwe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Human exposure; Persistent organic pollutants POPs ; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : An extensive use of chemicals in countless consumer products has resulted in human exposure to several persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Sufficient knowledge about their chemical composition properties and environmental faith is required, to be able to proper risk assess and regulate the substances. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fungal Redox Enzymes Involved in the Oxidation of Organic Pollutants

    Author : Enrique Terrazas; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biotechnology; Biokemisk teknik; Organic pollutants.; Environmental technology; pollution control; Miljöteknik; kontroll av utsläpp; Biochemical technology; Laccase; Lignin peroxidase; Manganese peroxidase; Fusarium sp. strain BOL35; Biodegradation; Bjerkandera sp. strain BOL13; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : This work describes the degradation of nonylphenol, toxaphene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]pyrene and dyes using fungi and their redox enzymes. Two fungi, Bjerkandera sp. strain BOL13 and Fusarium sp. strain BOL35 were isolated from different geographic area in Bolivia. READ MORE

  4. 4. Models of the Distribution of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Marine Environment

    Author : N. Johan Persson; Dag Broman; Kevin Jones; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; persistent organic pollutants; mass balance models; fugacity models; eutrophication; PCDD F; PCB; PCN; soot carbon.; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is a group of chemicals that are toxic, undergo long-range transport and accumulate in biota. Due to their persistency the distribution and recirculation in the environment often continues for a long period of time. READ MORE

  5. 5. Developmental Neurotoxicity of Environmental Pollutants : Effects on neuronal protein markers after neonatal exposure

    Author : Iwa Lee; Henrik Viberg; Elena Jazin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental neurotoxicity; Neonatal exposure; Protein markers; Environmental pollutants; Biologi med inriktning mot ekotoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology;

    Abstract : This thesis focused on investigations of the developmental neurotoxic effects of bisphenol A (BPA) or perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), after a single neonatal exposure, during a critical period of the brain development in mice.BPA is a well-known industrial chemical used in the production of polymer products and PFHxS is used as an industrial additive as a surfactant.
