  1. 1. Diagnostic evaluation of fetal death with special reference to intrauterine infections

    Author : Karin Petersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Fetal death; stillbirth; investigational protocol; congenital toxoplasmosis; parvovirus B19; Internet; INFPREG;

    Abstract : The incidence of intrauterine fetal death (>=28 gestational weeks) is approximately 4/1000 births in Sweden. In order to arrive at a potential cause of death, a number of investigations have been recommended in the diagnostic evaluation of intrauterine fetal death (IUFD). READ MORE

  2. 2. Molecular diagnosis of infection with Toxoplasma gondii in immunocompromised patients

    Author : Benjamin Edvinsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Toxoplasma gondii; toxoplasmosis; transplantation; human immunodeficiency virus; polymerase chain reaction; internal amplification control; oligochromatography; Pyrosequencing;

    Abstract : The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii infects more than a billion people worldwide. The parasite is generally divided into three clonal lineages, denoted type I, II and III. READ MORE

  3. 3. Toxoplasma gondii in wild boars and domestic pigs in Sweden : implications for food safety

    Author : Camilla Gustafsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Ingestion of undercooked meat is a major risk factor for human toxoplasmosis, a disease caused by the zoonotic protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Infected pork, mutton and game meat are considered important infection sources in Europe. This thesis aims to describe the epidemiology of T. READ MORE

  4. 4. Posterior ocular malformations in children : teratological aspects

    Author : Kristina Teär Fahnehjelm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Teratology; ocular malformations; visual impairment; anti-epileptic drugs; congenital infection; optic nerve hypoplasia; coloboma; magnetic resonance imaging; neonatal cholestasis; dried blood spots;

    Abstract : Posterior ocular malformations are common causes of visual impairment in Swedish children. The most frequent diagnoses within this group are optic nerve hypoplasia and optic nerve/chorioretinal coloboma. Genetic factors, teratogens like medical/addictive drugs or congenital infections and unknown factors may cause these malformations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Dissemination of Toxoplasma gondii to the central nervous system : with special reference to in vivo bioluminescence imaging

    Author : Isabel Dellacasa Lindberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Toxoplasma gondii causes an asymtomatic chronic infection in immune competent individuals that can be life-threatening in individuals that become immuno-compromised or to the developing fetus. This thesis aimed to (1) establish a novel murine model to study acute and reactivated toxoplasmosis in real-time using in vivo bioluminescence imaging (BLI), (2) investigate the migratory pathways utilized by Toxoplasma for systemic dissemination, especially to the central nervous system (CNS) and (3) address the role of resident brain glia cells in the setting of recrudescent infection in mice.
