  1. 1. Bioinformatic and Biostatistic Analysis of Epigenetic Data from Humans and Mice in the Context of Obesity and its Complications

    Author : Sarah Voisin; Helgi Schiöth; Claudine Junien; Romain Barres; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; obesity; genetics; epigenetics; DNA methylation; sleep; developmental origins of health and disease; single nucleotide polymorphism; genome-wide association study;

    Abstract : Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980 and at least 2.8 million people die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. An elevated body weight is the result of the interplay between susceptibility gene variants and an obesogenic environment, and recent evidence shows that epigenetic processes are likely involved. 2. 2. Structure-Function Studies of Bacteriophage P2 Integrase and Cox protein

    Author : Jesper Eriksson; Elisabeth Haggård; Karin Hammer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacteriophage P2; site-specific recombination; integrase; transcriptional switch; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : Probably no group of organisms has been as important as bacteriophages when it comes to the understanding of fundamental biological processes like transcriptional control, DNA replication, site-specific recombination, e.t.c.The work presented in this thesis is a contribution towards the complete understanding of these organisms. 3. 3. Studies of the Ribosomal Protein S19 in Erythropoiesis

    Author : Hans Matsson; Niklas Dahl; Leif Carlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; RPS19; Rps19; erythropoiesis; erythroblastopenia; Diamond-Blackfan; anemia; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : Ribosomal proteins are components of the ribosome, the protein synthesis machinery. The ribosomal protein S19 gene (RPS19) is mutated in Diamond-Blackfan anemia, DBA, which is a rare congenital anemia with absence or reduction of erythroid precursors in bone marrow. In this thesis, the role of RPS19 in erythropoiesis is investigated. READ MORE

  4. 4. Genetic and Epigenetic Variation in the Human Genome : Analysis of Phenotypically Normal Individuals and Patients Affected with Brain Tumors

    Author : Cecilia De Bustos; Jan P. Dumanski; Joseph F. Costello; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; genetic variation; epigenetics; brain tumor; array-CGH; glioblastoma; ependymoma; microarray; methylation; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : Genetic and epigenetic variation is a key determinant of human diversity and has an impact on disease predisposition. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number polymorphisms (CNPs) are the main forms of genetic variation. The challenge is to distinguish normal variations from disease-associated changes. Abstract : In eukaryotes the genome adopts a non-random spatial organisation, which is important for gene regulation. However, very little is known about the driving forces behind nuclear organisation. READ MORE
