  1. 1. Wave Loads and Peak Forces on Moored Wave Energy Devices in Tsunamis and Extreme Waves

    Author : Linnea Sjökvist; Malin Göteman; Mats Leijon; Peter Stansby; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; OpenFOAM; CFD; Wave power; Tsunami waves; Extreme waves; Offshore; Engineering Science with specialization in Science of Electricity; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot elektricitetslära;

    Abstract : Surface gravity waves carry enormous amounts of energy over our oceans, and if their energy could be harvested to generate electricity, it could make a significant contribution to the worlds power demand. But the survivability of wave energy devices in harsh operating conditions has proven challenging, and for wave energy to be a possibility, peak forces during storms and extreme waves must be studied and the devices behaviour understood. 2. 2. Natural Hazards as Windows of Opportunity for Change : Character and Time Perspectives on Environmental Opportunities and Preparedness

    Author : Åsa Davidsson; Magnus Johansson; Carl Bonander; Yvonne Andersson Sköld; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; window of opportunity; change; environment; natural hazard; preparedness; Risk and Environmental Studies; Risk- och miljöstudier;

    Abstract : In the aftermath of natural hazards, opportunities often arise for society to make changes that prevent future losses. These changes can also have environmental impacts, increase preparedness, and contribute to sustainable development. READ MORE

  3. 3. Developing geochemical and mineralogical proxies for the correlation of paleotsunami layers

    Author : Linda Löwhagen; Malin Kylander; Stefan Wastegård; Eve Arnold; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marine Geology; maringeologi;

    Abstract : The catastrophic Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 raised urgent questions about the paleotsunami history in the region. Numerous studies have since been conducted to gain better understanding of the magnitude, frequency and impact of past tsunamis, especially around the coasts of the Indian Ocean. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mapping bathymetry : From measurement to applications

    Author : Benjamin Hell; Martin Jakobsson; Michele Rebesco; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ocean and coastal mapping; Digital Bathymetric Model; Geographical Information System; Applications of bathymetric data; Baltic Sea; Arctic Ocean; Seafloor morphology; Ocean circulation; Other earth sciences; Övrig geovetenskap; Marine Geoscience; marin geovetenskap;

    Abstract : Surface elevation is likely the most fundamental property of our planet. In contrast to land topography, bathymetry, its underwater equivalent, remains uncertain in many parts of the World ocean. Bathymetry is relevant for a wide range of research topics and for a variety of societal needs. READ MORE

  5. 5. New Forms of Collaboration in Emergency Response Systems : A framework for participatory design of information systems

    Author : Kayvan Yousefi Mojir; Sofie P Pilemalm; Stefan Holgersson; Björn JE Johansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : An emergency response systems (ERS) is usually responsible for delivering essential services to save lives and minimise environmental damage in case of small, frequent or large-scale emergencies. The ongoing global financial crisis, lack of professional resources, public sector cuts and rising public expectations are some of the challenges ERSs currently are facing. READ MORE
