  1. 1. Tumor necrosis factor-a in atherosclerosis

    Author : Stefan Jovinge; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : atherosclerosis; oxidized low-density lipoprotein; monocytes; tumor necrosis factor-a; cytokinesis; ets-l; matrix metalloproteinases; apoptosis; glucose metabolism; insulin resistance; myocardial infarction;

    Abstract : The presence of inflammatory cells is prominent at all phases of the atherosclerotic process leaving no doubt that the inflammation is of central importance in atherosclerosis. The recruitment of inflammatory cells into the vessel wall is therefore a key event in early lesion formation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hormonal regulation of liver and tumor growth

    Author : Ville Wallenius; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Liver; cytokine; interleukin-6; tumor necrosis factor; primary liver growth promoter; cyproterone acetate; nafenopin; hepatocyte growth factor; HGF receptor; tumor; sarcoma; N-terminal; truncated;

    Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to investigate the regulatory functions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) on liver growth, and the importance of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and the HGF receptor (Met) for growth of mesenchyme-derived tumors. The studies on different types of liver growth, measured as weight, DNA and protein content, and DNA synthesis, were performed on mice lacking the IL-6 or the TNF receptor-1 gene back-crossed to the C57bl/6 strain. 3. 3. Hematopoietic stem cells: c-mpl and TNF receptor function

    Author : Veslemøy Ramsfjell; Avdelningen för molekylärmedicin och genterapi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tumor necrosis factor-a.; in vivo reconstitution; ex vivo expansion; long-term bone marrow culture; differentiation; proliferation; synergy; Hematopoietic stem cells; thrombopoietin; Haematology; extracellular fluids; Hematologi; extracellulära vätskor;

    Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are crucial to life. Daily and throughout the life span of an individual they are responsible for replacing approximately 10(12) mature blood cells. Mature cells are, for example, required for transportation of oxygen, defense against infections and to stop bleeding. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of Inflammatory Mediators on Pulmonary Airways

    Author : Ofir Bachar; Klinisk och experimentell allergiforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; electric ?eld stimulation; bradykinin; airway; tumor necrosis factor a; Respiratory system; nitric oxide; Andningsorganen; Toll-like receptor; prostaglandin E2; neurotrophin; allergy;

    Abstract : Chronic inflammation is together with excessive contraction of the airways key features of asthma. The aims of the thesis were to analyze the effect of inflammatory mediators on airway smooth muscle, using an in vitro model of cultured murine airways. READ MORE

  5. 5. Regulation of human macrophage gene expression by oxidized low density lipoprotein. Studies on tumor necrosis factor-a and global gene expression profiles

    Author : Mikael C. O. Englund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : atherosclerosis; macrophage; gene expression; TNF-a; oxidized LDL; oxysterol; transcription factor; microarray;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial and progressive disease that is characterized by a focal thickening of the arteries caused by accumulation of lipoproteins, extracellular matrix, and the migration and proliferation of various cell types. Among the cells found in atherosclerotic lesions are macrophages, which accumulate lipids and are transformed into foam cells. READ MORE
