1. Novel Technologies for Mode-Locking of Solid-State Lasers
Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the investigation of novel technologies for mode-locking of diode-pumped, solid-state lasers. Novel saturable absorbers are used: quantum dots (QDs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which both are low-dimensional nano-formations. In addition, mode-locking by cascaded nonlinearities is explored. 2. Extreme Electron Beams and Brilliant X-rays : Generation, Manipulation and Characterization of Relativistic Electron Beams for and from Plasma-Based Accelerators
Abstract : This thesis is based on work done by the author on the development of plasma-based electron accelerators driven by ultra-intense laser pulses and dense electron bunches. Plasma based accelerators have several benefits, such as accelerating fields around 1000 times stronger than in “conventional” radio-frequency accelerators, which can allow for shrinking the overall footprint of the accelerator. 3. Ultra-fast dynamics in atoms and molecules during photoionization: from attoseconds to femtoseconds
Abstract : Treating the correlated behaviour of multiple particles is challenging for both theory and experiment. This thesis reports on a variety of experimental investigations aiming to advance the understanding of fundamental processes in atoms and molecules: double ionization, isomerization and dissociation. 4. Photoelectron Spectroscopy on Atoms, Molecules and Clusters : The Geometric and Electronic Structure Studied by Synchrotron Radiation and Lasers
Abstract : Atoms, molecules and clusters all constitute building blocks of macroscopic matter. Therefore, understanding the electronic and geometrical properties of such systems is the key to understanding the properties of solid state objects. READ MORE

5. Short Pulses in Engineered Nonlinear Media
Abstract : Short optical pulses and engineered nonlinear media is a powerful combination. Mode locked pulses exhibit high peak powers and short pulse duration and the engineered ferro-electric KTiOPO4 facilitates several different nonlinear processes. READ MORE
