  1. 1. Modulation of serous salivary gland function by the sympathetic nervous system : a biochemical and ultrastructural study with special reference to β-adrenoceptor subtypes

    Author : Roger Henriksson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Rat parotid gland; guinea-pig submandibular gland; ß-adrenoceptor subtypes; sympathetic denervation; sympathetic superstimulation; amylase secretion; cyclic AMP; ultrastructural stereology;

    Abstract : The aim of the present investigation was to study the influence of the sympathetic nervous system and of various adrenoceptor agents on enzyme secretion and morphology in rat parotid and guinea-pig submandibular glands. Biochemical methods were combined with electron microscopical techniques. READ MORE

  2. 2. Exercise-induced muscle soreness : a qualitative and quantitative study of human muscle morphology and function

    Author : Jan Fridén; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Human; exercise; exertion; eccentric contractions; muscles; muscle strength; muscle soreness; fibre types; myofibrils; muscle proteins; histocy to chemistry; ultrastructure; stereology;

    Abstract : Exercise-induced muscle soreness is characterized by stiffness, tenderness and pain during active movements and weakness of the affected musculature the days after unusually or particularly heavy work. The most pronounced subjective symptoms do not arise immediately but rather between a couple of hours to some days after the exercise (a delayed-onset of muscle soreness), the intensity of pain is greatest about 48 hours after the work. 3. 3. Studies on nerve terminations in human mucosa and skin

    Author : Marita Hilliges; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Epithelium; herpes simplex; immunohistochemisry; Merkel cell; mucosa; nerves; oral; PGP 9.5; skin; stereology; urinary incontinence; vagina.;

    Abstract : In spite of their accessibility and important sensory function, the nervous tissue components of human oral and vaginal mucosa and skin have been subject to very few, if any, systematic investigations. Studies on the innervation of oral tissues have mainly focused on the dental pulp, the periodontium and the gingiva, probably because of specific clinical interest, thus largely neglecting the mucosa. 4. 4. Neurorestorative strategies involving neurogenesis, neuronal precursors and stem cells in animal models of Parkinson's disease

    Author : Ming Zhao; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Parkinson s disease; substantia nigra pars compacta; adult neurogenesis; stereology; apoptosis; dopamine; tyrosine hydroxylase; nestin; 5-bromodeoxyuridine; [3H]-thymidine; MPTP; 6-OHDA; platelet-derived growth factor-BB;

    Abstract : The general aims of the thesis is to provide evidence for neurogenesis in the adult substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), where the dopamine-producing neurons lost in Parkinson's disease (PD) reside; to optimize methods used for detecting newborn nerve cells in adult brain regions with a low rate of neurogenesis; to explore the mechanism of nerve cell death in animal models of parkinsonism and early degenerative and restorative changes in nigral cell populations; and to develop a therapeutic approach that could translate into a future restorative disease-modifying strategy in PD. 5. 5. Primary osteoarthrosis in guinea pigs

    Author : Edin de Bri; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The course of primary osteoarthrosis (OA) in Hartley guinea pigs, which spontaneously develop OA in their knee joints, was studied by stereology (quantitative morphology). Between 6 and 12 months of age, structural changes similar to those of human OA developed, predominantly in the central (non-meniscus-covered) medial condyle, while the lateral condyle remained unaffected.
