1. Gear Surface Machining for Noise Suppression
Abstract : Gear noise in modern automobiles is unacceptable. It has different sources, such as design parameters and manufacturing errors. Manufacturing errors, for example, can be reduced using advanced grinding operations. However, sometimes grinding operations can introduce micro-geometry deviations that cause severe noise problems. 2. Polymer effects on microemulsions and lamellar phases
Abstract : The main part of this thesis deals with the effects of adsorbing and non-adsorbing polymers when mixed with microemulsion droplets and bilayers in a lamellar phase. The phase behaviour, microstructure and interactions in a nonionic surfactant/ water/ oil-system, comprising penta ethylene oxide dodecyl ether (C12E5) and decane, was investigated. READ MORE

3. Structural Changes in Nonionic Surfactant Systems
Abstract : In this thesis we have studied structural changes of a nonionic surfactant self-assembly, as governed by changes in temperature and concentration. The techniques used in experimental investigations were dynamic and static light scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (using a novel specimen preparation protocol). 4. On the Combustion Characteristics of Closely-Coupled LD Diesel Injection Strategies
Abstract : Multiple-pilot injection strategies with both moderate and short time separations (dwells) are investigated in a light-duty diesel engine. Both conventional and optical engine experiments are performed. READ MORE

5. Life Prediction and Mechanical Behavior of Thermal Barrier Coatings
Abstract : Delamination and spallation of thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems, used in hot parts of gas turbines, have been studied with respect to thermal fatigue. TBCs with and without pre-existing cracks were investigated. Thermal shock tests were performed until coating spallation. READ MORE
