  1. 1. The population burden of gout and urate in Western Sweden : Prevalence, incidence, comorbidities, and association with cardiovascular disease

    Author : Panagiota Drivelegka; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gout; Epidemiology; Comorbidities; Cardiovascular disease;

    Abstract : Background: Gout is the most common type of inflammatory arthritis and is associated with several comorbidities and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, data on the epidemiology and comorbidity patterns of gout in Sweden are scarce, and whether its association with CVD is causal or not, is not clear. READ MORE

  2. 2. Endogenous antioxidants in human skeletal muscle and adaption in energy metabolism : with reference to exercise-training, exercise-related factors and nutrition

    Author : Michael B Svensson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : GSH; urate; Q10; Ubiquinone-10; myoblasts; muscle stem cells; high-intensity exercise; performance; overload training; adenine nucleotides; AMP deaminase; glycogen; carbohydrates.;

    Abstract : The antioxidant homeostasis is determined by a wide array of interacting cellular antioxidants, as well as being influenced by the homeostasis in energy metabolism. Changes in antioxidant homeostasis, as a consequences of altered production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). and/or by changes in the resident levels of antioxidants. READ MORE

  3. 3. Airway antioxidant responses to oxidative air pollution and vitamin supplementation

    Author : Annelie Behndig; Anders Blomberg; Ian S Mudway; Ragnberth Helleday; Isabelle Romieu; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; air pollution; ozone; diesel exhaust; airway inflammation; antioxidant; vitamin C; dehydroascorbate; vitamin supplementation; Medicin; lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Abstract : Air pollutants, such as ozone (O3) and diesel exhaust particles, elicit oxidative stress in the lung. Antioxidants within the respiratory tract lining fluid (RTLF) protect the underlying tissue from oxidative injury. READ MORE

  4. 4. Selenium Compounds and Antioxidant Capacity in Bovine Milk. Studies on Glutathione Peroxidase, Bioavailability and Electrochemical Techniques

    Author : Jun Chen; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; General biomedical sciences; Biomedicinska vetenskaper allmänt ; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Chemical technology and engineering; Livsmedelsteknik; Food and drink technology; amperometry; voltammetry; antioxidant capacity; ileostomy; bioavailability; glutathione peroxidase; bovine milk; selenium;

    Abstract : The efficacy and function of antioxidants have been intensively studied in foods and other biological systems in recent decades. This thesis concerns different aspects of the antioxidant properties of bovine milk, with emphasis on measurement of the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), the activity of the selenium-containing glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), and the bioavailability of selenium from bovine milk in humans. 5. 5. Elimination of caffeine metabolites in man

    Author : Nikolaos Rodopoulos; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : C8-oxidation capillary elearophoresis dimethylxanthines high-performance liquidchromatography liver cirrhosis N-acetylation N-demethylation monomethylurates monomethylxanthines;

    Abstract : Plasma, saliva and urinary caffeine (CA), paraxanthine (PX), theobromine (TB), theophylline (TP) and their metabolites were, after separation into fractions by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), quantitated by capillary electrophoresis (CE). In healthy adults, 96% of the total amount of excreted compounds derived from CA were dimethylxanthines (DMXs) and metabolites, the remainder 4% being nonmetabolized CA and its non-demethylated urate.
