1. Quantifying pollutant spreading and the risk of water pollution in hydrological catchments : A solute travel time-based scenario approach
Abstract : The research presented in the thesis develops an approach for the estimation and mapping of pollutant spreading in catchments and the associated uncertainty and risk of pollution. The first step in the approach is the quantification and mapping of statistical and geographical distributions of advective solute travel times from pollutant input locations to downstream recipients. 2. Water quality modeling based on landscape analysis: importance of riparian hydrology
Abstract : Several studies in high-latitude catchments have demonstrated the importance of near-stream riparian zones as hydrogeochemical hotspots with a substantial influence on stream chemistry. An adequate representation of the spatial variability of riparian-zone processes and characteristics is the key for modeling spatio-temporal variations of stream-water quality. READ MORE

3. More Water, Less Grass? : An assessment of resource degradation and stakeholders’ perceptions of environmental change in Ombuga Grassland, Northern Namibia
Abstract : The objectives of this thesis are to assess: to what degree have natural resources deteriorated in a grazing area in northern Namibia, how do perceptions of environmental change held by local stakeholders there, correspond to scientific assessments, and how do these relate to national estimates? Analysis of the process of developing national indicators for monitoring of land degradation concluded that specific indicators should be developed on national level, and in some instances even on local level as there are no universal causes of land degradation. According to farmers overgrazing and low rainfall since the early 1990s cause negative environmental changes in the study area, partly confirming findings from national monitoring. READ MORE

4. Inhibition of Aluminium Pigments for Waterborne Coatings
Abstract : Micrometer-sized aluminium flakes for use as pigments in waterborne coatings need protection, since the reaction between aluminium and water causes formation of aluminium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. The aluminium hydroxide destroys the metallic appearance of the pigment flakes and the evolution of hydrogen gas leads to a dangerous pressure build-up in the paint containers. READ MORE

5. Water-based Flexographic Printing on Polymer-coated Board
Abstract : This doctoral thesis comprises three studies dealing with water-based flexography on polymer-coated boards, which have been presented in the five papers included at the end of the thesis. The first study (covered in three papers) presents results from characterisation of a matrix of water-based inks with respect to their rheology, surface tension, wetting, and fulltone printing performance on PE-coated board.
