  1. 1. Intermolecular interactions in hydrogen bonded 1:1 molecular complexes. A matrix isolation study

    Author : Anders Engdahl; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; infrared laser irradiation; dimethyl ether; water dimer; hydrogen chloride; formamide; acetone; formic acid; ammonia; water; intermolecular; matrix isolation; FIR; FTIR; infrared; isomerisation; ab initio; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : A number of matrix isolated binary hydrogen bonded complexes with water as one of the components have been investigated with FTIR in the mid and far infrared regions. Water has been found to be the hydrogen bond donor in complexes with water, ammonia, dimethyl ether and acetone. READ MORE

  2. 2. Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Studies at the Air-Liquid Interface

    Author : Eric Tyrode; Mark Rutland; Paul Davies; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sum Frequency Generation; SFG; VSFS; surfactant; adsorption; water; surface structure; hydration; surface tension; fluorosurfactants; liquid-air interface; poly ethylene oxide surfactants; surface molecular orientation; acetic acid.; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis the structure and hydration of small organic and amphipilic compounds adsorbed at the air-liquid interface, have been studied using the nonlinear optical technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS). The second order nature of the sum frequency process makes this technique particularly surface sensitive and very suitable for interfacial studies, as molecules at the surface can be distinguished even in the presence of a vast excess of the same molecules in the bulk. 3. 3. Light’EM up! : structural characterization of light-driven membrane protein complexes by cryogenic electron microscopy

    Author : André Tomás Graça; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Johannes Messinger; Karina Persson; Werner Kühlbrandt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3D reconstruction; Arabidopsis thaliana; assembly; chlorophyll; cryo-EM; cyanobacteria; Deinococus radiodurans; electron; land plants; membrane protein complexes; Photosystem II; proton; single-particle analysis; S-Layer Deinoxanthin Binding Complex SDBC ; water.; Biochemistry; biokemi; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Abstract : Photosynthesis is probably the most important process for allowing life to develop into the diverse forms we see today. In this process, solar radiation is used to convert CO2 into biomass. From this process, we obtain oxygen to breathe, sources of food (plant biomass), and the potential for clean and sustainable energy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modeling of intra- and intermolecular potentials

    Author : Stevica Brdarski; Beräkningskemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical chemistry; N-formylglycinamide; formamide; water dimer; quantum chemistry; molecular dynamics simulations; repulsion modeling; perturbation theory; NEMO; molecular interactions; Teoretisk kemi; kvantkemi;

    Abstract : Modeling of interactions between molecules is investigated by theoretical means within the NEMO model. The model is based on a partitioning of the interaction energy at the Hartree-Fock level into first- and second-order perturbation theory. The interaction energy is given as a sum of electrostatic, induction, repulsion, and dispersion energies. READ MORE

  5. 5. Emulsification of Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) -characterization of dispersions and emulsifiers

    Author : Kristina Mohlin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hydrolysis; droplet size; hydrophobizing agent; dispersion; surfactant; AKD; emulsification; viscosity; surface tension; polymer; phase behavior; Alkyl Ketene Dimer;

    Abstract : Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) is a commonly used hydrophobizing agent in the paper industry, introducing capillary absorption barriers for polar liquids, which makes the paper more resistant to liquid penetration. Since AKD is a so-called internal sizing agent it is usually added in the form of a water-borne dispersion. READ MORE
