  1. 1. Osteoarthritis of the Hip and Uncemented Total Hip Arthroplasty : Effects of Immediate Weight Bearing on Implant Stability, Bone Mineral Density, and Body Composition

    Author : Olof Wolf; Hans Mallmin; Sune Larsson; Jan Milbrink; Per Mattsson; Per Adolphson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Osteoarthritis of the hip; uncemented; total hip arthroplasty; stability; RSA; BMD; DXA; body composition; weight bearing; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi;

    Abstract : The initial recommendation for the postoperative regime after uncemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) was 6-12 weeks of partial weight bearing (PWB) to obtain a stable implant position during bone ingrowth. In recent years patients with uncemented THA have increasingly practiced full weight bearing (FWB) after surgery, which has largely been based on clinical experience rather than on scientific evidence. 2. 2. Distal femur fracture in the elderly patient

    Author : Martin Paulsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Distal femur fracture; Geriatric patients; Weight-bearing; Recovery; Secondary displacement; Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis MIPO ; Fracture alignment; Fracture classification;

    Abstract : Studies on the epidemiology of distal femur fractures show a vast increase in low-energy trauma-associated fractures in older ages. Age-related changes in bones lead to loss of bone matrix and increased porosity, which entails an increased risk for fractures and different fracture patterns than in younger individuals. READ MORE

  3. 3. Radiography and bone scintigraphy in osteoarthritis of the knee: comparison with MR imaging

    Author : Torsten Boegård; Lund Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiologi; Klinisk fysiologi; medical instrumentation; tomography; radiology; Clinical physics; MR imaging; bone scintigraphy; osteophyte; joint space width; weight-bearing; radiograms; Knee joint; osteoarthritis; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering;

    Abstract : The aim was to compare radiography of the tibiofemoral joint (TFJ) and the patellofemoral joint (PFJ), as well as bone scinigraphy with MR imaging in middle-aged individuals with chronic knee pain in the format of a prospective study of knee osteoarthritis. Individuals aged 35-54 years with chronic knee pain were identified. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies on the role of NGF in arthritis-induced pain transmission using gait and weight bearing as outcome measures

    Author : Kristina Ängeby Möller; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Pain is one of the most common reasons for seeking healthcare, with approximately forty percent of those suffering from chronic pain having joint pain. Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of joint pain, but currently there are few treatments available. READ MORE

  5. 5. Community-based osteoporosis prevention: Physical activity in relation to bone density, fall prevention, and the effect of training programmes : The Vadstena Osteoporosis Prevention Project

    Author : Ann-Charlotte Grahn Kronhed; Margareta Möller; Toomas Timpka; Leif Svanström; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vadstena Osteoporosis Prevention Project VOPP ; weight-bearing training study; physical activity; training programmes; elderly; forearm bone mineral density BMD ; balance-training; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on studies of the ten-year community-based intervention programme entitled, the Vadstena Osteoporosis Prevention Project (VOPP). The specific aims of the research were to describe the effects of physical activity and training programmes on bone mass and balance performance in adults, to determine whether a fall risk prevention programme could motivate personal actions among the elderly, to ascertain whether the intervention programme could reduce the incidence of forearm and hip fractures.
