  1. 1. Studies of Innate and Adaptive Immunity in Islet Transplantation

    Author : Maria Hårdstedt; Olle Korsgren; Bo Nilsson; Thierry Berney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetes; islet transplantation; islets of Langerhans; xenotransplantation; nonhuman primate; blood; whole blood model; innate immunity; adaptive immunity; IBMIR; chemokines;

    Abstract : Clinical islet transplantation is today an established alternative treatment for a selected group of type 1 diabetes patients. The predominant technique for transplantation is infusion of islets in the liver via the portal vein. READ MORE

  2. 2. Patient-Specific Finite Element Modeling of the Blood Flow in the Left Ventricle of a Human Heart

    Author : Jeannette Hiromi Spühler; Johan Hoffman; Johan Jansson; Mariano Vazquez; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Finite element method; Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method; Fluid-Structure interaction; Contact model; parallel algorithm; blood flow; left ventricle; aortic valves; patient-specific heart model;

    Abstract : Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Therefore, numerous studies are undertaken to identify indicators which can be applied to discover cardiac dysfunctions at an early age. READ MORE

  3. 3. Adenovirus-mediated Gene Therapy of Prostate Cancer

    Author : Angelika Danielsson; Mangus Essand; Thomas H. Tötterman; Gunnel Hallden; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : adenovirus; adenoviral vector; oncolytic virus; gene therapy; prostate cancer; PEGylation; HDAC inhibitor; whole blood model; whole blood neutralization assay; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology; Molekylär genetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : Adenovirus-mediated gene therapy is a potential complement to standard cancer treatments. Advantages are that vectors can be used to target tumors and that replicating viruses lead to increased therapeutic dosage. READ MORE

  4. 4. Biomaterials and Hemocompatibility

    Author : Anna E. Engberg; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Peter Zipfel; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Complement; Coagulation; Whole blood; Biomaterials; Polymers and Hemocompatibility; Immunology; Immunologi; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Biomaterials are commonly used in the medical clinic today; however, artificial materials can activate the cascade systems in the blood (complement-, coagulation-, contact- and fibrinolytic systems) as well as the platelets to various degrees. When an artificial surface comes in contact with blood, plasma proteins will be adsorbed to the surface within seconds. READ MORE

  5. 5. Antibody- and Peptide-based Immunotherapies : Proof-of-concept and safety considerations

    Author : Erika Fletcher; Sara Mangsbo; Vivianne Malmström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immune complex; conjugat; vaccine; CD40; whole blood; cytokine release syndrome; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : The aim of cancer immunotherapy is to eradicate tumours by inducing a tumour-specific immune response. This thesis focuses on how antibodies and peptides can improve antigen presentation and the subsequent tumour-specific T cell response. Tumour recognition by the immune system can be promoted through delivery of antigen in the form of a vaccine. READ MORE
