Simulation of mechanical cutting

University dissertation from Luleå : Luleå tekniska universitet

Abstract: This thesis deals with simulation of mechanical cutting. It focuses on orthogonal cutting. Thus it is possible to use two-dimensional models. The strong thermo-mechanical coupling must be accounted for in the model. Two approaches are compared. The first one uses a tied slide line which released at a certain critical stress. The other is based on very large plastic strains and the use of remeshing techniques for the chip formation process. The first approach is used in the commercial code Abaqus and in an in-house code, SiMPle. The second approach is not possible with Abaqus. A large part on the work is concerned with techniques for using this kind of model in SiMPle. The thesis comprises an introductory part and two conference proceedings and one journal publication.
