  2. 2. Aspects of Vitamin D : Prevalence of deficiency and impact on musculoskeletal parameters

    Author : Anne Björk; Östen Ljunggren; Gunnar Johansson; Andreas Kindmark; Anna Spångeus; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vitamin D; CYP2R1; Vitamin D receptor Gene; Polymorphisms; Muscle Strength; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Endocrinology and Diabetology;

    Abstract : Vitamin D is central in calcium turnover, and adequate levels are important for skeletal health. It is not clear how large contributions from food and sunlight are in Swedish primary care patients, considering the low radiation of UVB in Sweden and fortification of some foods, and whether differences exist between patients of immigrant and Swedish origin. 3. 3. Genetic Variability in Human Bone Phenotypes : The Vitamin D Receptor Gene and the Estrogen Receptor-α Cofactor RIZ Gene

    Author : Elin Grundberg; Andreas Kindmark; Östen Ljunggren; Helena Brändström; André G. Uitterlinden; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Important candidate genes to human bone phenotypes are those involved in the regulation of hormonal action, such as the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and the estrogen receptor-α (ERα) genes and their cofactors. RIZ1 is a specific ERα cofactor proved to strongly enhance the function of the ERα. READ MORE

  4. 4. Graves' Disease; Aspects on Orbitopathy and Bone Metabolism

    Author : Selwan Khamisi; Östen Ljunggren; Bo Freyschuss; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid gland, with an annual incidence of 21 in 100,000 individuals in Sweden. Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is relatively common in GD and affects 50% of all patients to varying degrees of severity, with severe forms affecting 3–5% of patients. READ MORE

    Abstract : Bone is a dynamic tissue that is continuously remodelled, a process that requires equal amounts of osteoclastic bone resorption and osteoblastic bone formation. Inflammation may disturb the equilibrium and result in local and/or systemic bone loss. Negative bone mass balance occurs in several chronic inflammatory diseases, e.g. READ MORE
